For a change this year my wife and I are hosting Christmas dinner for 8 people. Usually we go else where but with this being the first one in our new home we said we will do the honors this year.

I'm fed up of Turkey which i have had for the past 26 years of my life. I'm looking for something different to do. I'm a fairly decent cook and will try anything. There are no real fussy eaters either.

My Oven is a standard size and have a 4 ring gas hob. I also have steamer with 2 levels.

What is everyone having as i need some inspiration!

(i wanted more answers than i would get in cooking forum)

There's just two of us this year...and we are going away the Saturday after Boxing Day. So I think I'll cook a duck or a small leg of wild boar.

If you are pushing the boat out, you can get a goose wrapped around the turkey/duck/chicken mix.

Get it now and freeze it.

Goose has gone past its best by Christmas, its too late to eat Goose really, now is the ideal time for a Goose.

Christmas Day: Goose stuffed with shredded rabbit and redcurrants
Boxing Day: Sirloin Roast of Wagyu

Ballontine just means to remove the carcass and roll the bird into an easily carvable roast.

Think Toby Carverys and the like.

Ah, ok, I got it from the forman and field catalogue.

Can you get goose breast or similar, I've never eaten it, fancy trying it, but have don't fancy buying a massive bird.

BTW plotloss, are you a bit of a foody?

lamb shanks - very little prep, and into oven for 3-4 hrs. Add some Desirée mash (perhaps with mustard or pecarino added) and veg to suit.

Pish easy, low cost, high flavour
