At last - some comment on Sir James Crosby's mortgage review, which has been put on back burner.. but it sounds like it has been shelved again, with only a consultation being launched. It was first commissioned in April this year, and the Government indicated that it could come up with solution to seizure in mortgage market.

anyone got the details for this:
4:30pm: Appropriately enough, there's a u-turn on the car tax fuel efficiency bands. The cost of running a large polluting gas-guzzler will rise by less than expected - just £5 a month.
THe current bandings will stay in place for next year, each going up by no more than £5. In 2010 they will introduce the re-banding (£400 or whatever for the "most polluting") that was going to happen next year.4:30pm: Appropriately enough, there's a u-turn on the car tax fuel efficiency bands. Vat down 2.5% "until the end of next year"
Fuel tax /alcohol/cigs duty up to offset the vat cut
somehow thing the latter wont be untill the end of next year
As I understand it, the VAT cut comes in from Monday, but doesn't include booze/cigs, so they are not actually going up. Fuel tax /alcohol/cigs duty up to offset the vat cut

anything on reducing stamp duty? (IMHO the smartest fiscal way to get house prices stabilised, moving activity up, so prices up and consumer confidence up)
Stamp duty could be abolished-it wouldn't sort this mess out! The market is going one way & one way only & 1st time buyers(the lift blood) know it..........crofty1984 said:

EFA.So,
- VAT down to encourage people into shops.
- As somebody else pointed out on a different thread, plan backfires as £9.99 item will remain at £9.99 and not £9.78, retailer will hang onto extra (understandably)
- Fuel, booze & cigaratte duty increased
- NI increased.
