Just had to replace a tyre to get though an MOT and my local main agent has fitted a Pilot Sport with a completly different tread pattern to the other Pilot Sports on the car. At first I thought they had fitted another Michelin variant but it does say Pilot Sport on the side and it certainly fits the car (19" on E46 M3). My other Pilot Sports have a distinctive V shape tread across the whole tyre width and are obviously directional. The new type has a very ordinary looking tread pattern. I challenged the agent and they said it's the new model tyre and the old tread pattern has been discontinued. Is this correct or have I been sold the wrong tyre? I last replaced one in February through Kwik Fit and that came with the V shape tread I was expecting. Any advice greatly appreciated.

The latest one is called the pilot sport 2 http://www.tirerack.com/images/tires/michelin/mi_p... and is a great tyre. The first generation is very hard to come by now and has been superseded. So no, you were not told porky pies.

Thanks, good to confirm that. Is it a problem to run with one tyre having a differnet tread to the others? Not that I have much choice other than spashing out for 3 more!

It's not recommended to have different treads/tyres on the same axle - so you may get away with just buying one more.

Is it on the front wheel? If so then thats fine, you just may feel a slight difference in steering.

If it is on the back wheel then the treads must be within 2mm of each other owing to the Limited slip diff.
If these are beyond the tolerances then you risk ''diff wind up'' that can cause your diff to fail.
I would suggest taking it back with this info if they are.

Yes it's on the front nearside and the front offside is going to need replacing quite soon anyway so sounds like it's no big deal. I know you should change tyres in pairs but at this price having just paid for an Inspection 2 and 12 months Insurance as well, it's been an expensive couple of weeks!

Welcome to the world of M!!! biggrin

Novemeber 2006 was my most expensive month of car ownership.

I was coming back across country and sat behind someone in an A4 for 6 miles doing 30mph on a 60mph road, but it was cold, damp and dark and the road was tight and twisty. I knew there was astraight ahead so waited.
Got to the straight and started to overtake, the road was still really narrow so didn't gun it, until the knob put his foot down to stop me going past!!
I dropped a gear and went passed him, but as I pulled back in there was a massive Hare in the road, I couldn't brake as numb nuts behind me would have probably gone into my rear so I hit the Hare and held on tight.

Got out and the bumper was shattered.
Ordered a new one - CSL carbon bumper £2,888.00!

Week later insurance due, had lost my parking space off the street - £1250 up from £690

Following Tueseday bumper arrived, fitted and good as new.

Thursday night driving down the A11, railng and dark, road works and a slow line of traffic behind me, something in the road, braked but hit it!
Traffic cone lying in the roadbut facing the other way so only the black base in view.
Stuck under the bumper and ripped all the bottom off it!

Second bumper ordered!!
Discounted price of £1900.00

Warranty expired - £1050.00

Total £7088.00

Plus the £400 a month payment and fuel, so more like £7800 for that month.

These cars are great on a normal month, but when stuff needs doing they start to get pricey!

I have to say, BMW were great, they back dated the discount on the first bumper and I managed to get the Highways Agency to pay for the second one. So it wasn't as bad in the end, but took the shine off the car for .....oh, a few days at least! wink
