My almost non-existent understanding of genetics was that (almost) every cell in an organism contains the same genetic information.
Imagine my surprise then at getting a blood test result which says that I am "mosaic genetic"!
out of 30 cells the lab tested, normal male XY sex chromosomes in 24 of them, but in 6 (20%) , I just have an X chromosome!
As a normal phenotype male, I've had no reason to ever think I was physically unusual.
It gets weirder. I google "genetic mosaic". The second link gives me all the nutty info I just really needed to hear:
"A genetic mosaic is a creature whose body is built of a mixture of cells of two or more different genotypes. In mammals they arise by several different mechanisms:
The fusion of two different zygotes, or early embryos, into one. (The reverse of the process that produces identical twins!) The resulting animal is called a chimera (after the monster in Greek mythology with a lion's head, goat's body, and serpent's tail). The tetraparental mouse is a chimera formed this way. But on rare occasions, the same process can occur spontaneously in humans "
The "resulting animal" , eh?
So if I'm not mistaken here, I've done something akin to eating my twin sister in the early stages of conception?!
further googling just gets weirder and weirder, with talk of people starting to mutate (time to start watching "heroes" i guess), not to mention the haermaphrodite related links.
Wasnt meant to have an appointment to discuss results til february, but when test results came back they were like "can you come in tomorrow?"
getting referred to some uber-genetecists who will no doubt prod/probe me with sticks
I can already visualise the men in white coats addressing me through a megaphone as im standing naked in a plate glass laboratory cell, like tom hanks in "splash" shouting "I'm not a fish! Im not a fish!"
haven't found any superpowers yet.
