Induction hobs
Discussion
Anyone own one or offer some buying advice for them?
I've got no gas at my house, and have been struggling on with a metal plate-type electic hob for the last nearly 5 years. Using a ceramic-type in a rented appartment we stayed in convinced me to trade up (I hadn't previously realised there was that much difference), but everyone seems to be raving about the induction ones now.
Most of my decent pans are ferrous (or have sufficent ferrous content) so no major worries on that side, but the price difference for seemingly equal watt-rated items seem to vary wildly - what features should I be looking for? Is there any point is going for the recognised brands other than neighbourhood bragging rights?. Has the technology moved on significantly since these were first introduced?

We've had a Zanussi touch-control induction hob for around 5 years, IIRC it cost just over £200. We've not really wanted anything else, not had any problems with it (apart from the bottom right plate overheating and shutting down if used for too long) and it is stupidly easy to clean.
Have a Kueppersbusch one since July no probs and would not swap for gas or anything-
I think as for brands (although Kueppersbusch were the first ones to offer this in Germany and are top??)its more what you want and are happy to pay (I got a deal on the bay for 400 quid which is half retail, so if you shop around you could get a branded item for less or the same money then a trade one)
I personally do not think the magnets are manufactured by more then three manufactures currently anyway (on of them being Siemens, I believe), so I think a lot of badge engineering going on here...
However you get is what you pay for in other ways and branded (or more expensive) items will have better Ceramics (go for schott if you can) then others
Wattage- It is important to understand how induction works- the degree of efficiency is a lot higher then with other forms of hobs (about 70% compared to about 30% on a conventional electric hob, so this reduces your energy bill (and carbon emissions should you care), or it reduces the need to buy in "high wattage" numbers as you will have more power on tap
Other advantages are mentioned above
You will need compatible pots
Enjoy
