Getting a Book Published

I have decided to write a book.

I had a literary epiphany after consuming a bottle of exceedingly good Pinot Noir at the weekend; hastily made some wine-infused notes on the back of an old envelope, and will now be devoting my spare time to the creation of what I am sure will become a international bestseller.

The thing is, I have never written a book before. The leg work is not a problem, but how does one go about getting a book published? Is there anyone on PH who can shed some light on what I need to do when my first draft is completed? Also, how do I go about getting my idea protected? The last thing I want is some scurrilous book publisher stealing my concept for their own ill gotten gains.

(Needless to say, if successful there could be countless money spinning follow ups)

Get the plan for the whole book done and then, once you have fully written the first couple of chapters, send them and the synopsis for the whole book to relevant agents. Big publishers don't accept unsolicited scripts anymore, you really do need to go through an agent.

Having said that, a number of my early literary influences may well have come from the Ladybird stable

I'd advise writing it first and then worrying about it! So many people have the intention of writing a novel and stopping after the first couple of pages.

Ive had an idea for a world best seller for years. The first 2 chapters and the synopsis is on my laptop somewhere. If you've hacked in and stolen my work of genius there will be trouble!.

Funnily enough im sure my idea cam to me over a decent bottle of red.
