Hi all, I am after some advice to clean marks from aluminium. It's the inlet manifold on a single carb Alfasud, quite a large casting with a slightly rough surface. I've tried brake cleaner, carb cleaner and WD40 which has got it nice and clean but I can't shift the small dark grey spots it's covered in. I don't want to put anything on it that might turn it darker. Any ideas?

thanks

Dish washer. Just make sure the wife is out!

The best thing for cleaning small alloy parts is a large saucepan, half full of water and as it starts to boil turn the temp down and add a couple of cups of biological washing powder (has to be powder) and leave the part to boil for 10 mins or so. They come out looking like new.

another 'old school' trick was to boil up marked or even downright 'furry' ally bits in vinegar! a lot of the old bikers used to do it when restoring old engine/carb castings. stinks, but works well and doesnt damage the castings
