A few questions...
A lot of people upgrade the brakes on their Monaro. Is the VXR8 fitted with better or more adequate brakes as standard?
Is the VXR8 properly rustproofed, as I understand Monaros are not...?
Is it true that a standard 5.7 motor has stronger internals than the 6.0?
Does the VXR8 have a more up to date, and therefore better handling, chassis than the Monaro?
Is the build quality generally better on the VXR8?

A few questions...
A lot of people upgrade the brakes on their Monaro. Is the VXR8 fitted with better or more adequate brakes as standard? - VXR8 brakes are very good from what I have heard as apposed to the "adequit" brakes on the Ro as standard.
Is the VXR8 properly rustproofed, as I understand Monaros are not...? No idea but for the time most keep their cars Id say its not a problem to worry about.
Is it true that a standard 5.7 motor has stronger internals than the 6.0? No idea but both should be upgraded if going high power really.
Does the VXR8 have a more up to date, and therefore better handling, chassis than the Monaro? Its slower round the top gear test track so make your own assumptions.
Is the build quality generally better on the VXR8? Different car so hard to compare really... neither are German solidity though.

Is the VXR8 properly rustproofed, as I understand Monaros are not...?Yes both are properly rustproofed. Monaro uses same build package as the GTO's from the States and Canada

VXR8 brakes are pretty good. Same size as the AP's that are an upgrade on Monaro. In fact, they are AP's.
Id say rustproofing is no better than monaro. We have just rustproofed our first one.
5.7 or 6 litre. Strength wise, nothing in it really. Both have weak pistons which needs to be considered in more extreme forced induction applications.
VXR8 suspension is far better than Monaro suspension. It is an up to date design and fully adjustable too.
Build quality, very subjective but i wouldn't say it has improved much.
If you're asking these questions because you're looking to buy I'd say:
VXR8 - expensive but value falling like a stone. Has 4 doors, a big boot, good brakes and good traction. Looks strangely like a modern day Vauxhall Belmont.
Monaro VXR VZ - Same lovely 6.0 LS2 engine as the early VXR8. Not as much traction as the 'R8 but all the more fun for it. The LS2 is not stronger as such but can make more power more easily because it breathes better than the LS1. Basic brakes are bigger & better than V2 CV8 but essentially the same as the VZ CV8.
Monaro CV8 V2/VZ - 5.7 LS1 same block architecture as the 6.0 LS2 but cast differently. Some say it's stronger. Cannot be bored past 5.7L but can be stroked to 6.3L. If you want to modify this is the way to go as the engine (and the car it's in) is cheaper and more tasteful IMHO. To get big numbers you will need to replace the internals and add decent heads to LS1 or LS2 so you might as well do it to the cheaper engine. If you want more capacity you will need the LS2 as your starting point.
Monaro VXR V2 - LS1. Very rare & collectible, slightly more power than the VZ CV8; best left standard for originality.
All Monaro brakes are really a bit crap so see if you can get one with APs allready fitted.
I you're lucky Granadaman will be around in a minute to tell you about gear ratios.

Nice post Sir. Same family LSx engine, but new generation, Gen3 vs Gen4 an evolution rather than revolution, new windage bay design, plus siamesed bores, then different sensor locations and pickups Cam, Map etc. Some of these changes external to the engine.vxr8 is way more practical, buy one, forget the monaro its rubbish unless you only ever use the front seats. You should be able to get a vxr8 for just under 20k these days with at least 2 years still left on warranty. Go for the manual if you want to mod. The stock engine is pretty beefy as is.
LOL, In other words it's stronger. As an aside I once gutted a 6.0 development block and at the time I'm sure the block floor had been raised to provide additional support to the siamesed liners. This could have meant less coolant capacity but I've never heard of that being an issue.

Shame on you sir! Ro's still better looking though....

I agree the Ro's way better looking. The Monaros Sexy, the R8's Boxy
I'm gonna add to that. At the Vauxhall day(Santa Pod) i kicked a R8's ass. Granted it was his mates car and he'd never driven it, therefor he fluffed his gears. Still a win's a win. That's my claim to fame

Thats also why you beat me on one too
One. Your have a word with yourself. IIRC there was more than one.
Two's more like it and it would have been three if i hadn't slowed down to see if you was alright.
So there
To be fair on a couple of occasions i got a better launch than you. There was'nt much in it.

Get your R8 up to waxworks in Morpeth for undersealing/rustproofing (www.thewaxworks.net/about_us.html)
Simon is the guy to speak to and his contact details are on the website.
It's never too late for rustproofing. I had my Torino done last year when it arrived in the UK and it was 37 years old!
:P
£350 and it takes him about a day but he does a sterling job and waxoyls everywhere including inside all the panels...I mean literally everywhere!
It's a sh1t job to do yourself and I reckon he's well worth the dosh!
If you wanna check out mine gimme a phone.
