From what you describe i would be inclined to think it is a battery issue not a starter motor problem.
Sounds like there isn't enough current to engage the motor which is why you here the clicking sound. Halfords sell decent batteries at competetive prices, they may well do a quick test for you and tell you if your battery is the problem or not, failing that any garage with a meter will tell you. It is a 2 minute job, go around the back and speak to one of the mechs yourself instead of making a full on booking.

Check the battery voltage when you're trying to start it. If it dips below about 9V it is probably a battery problem. If the battery voltage seems OK then check the voltage between the starter motor main terminal and the engine block. You should see virtually the same voltage here while trying to crank. Any difference would indicate a wiring problem, most likely the earth.
