Wakefield... Recommendations?

I've got a training course all next week at West Yorkshire Police's training centre at Wakefield.

It's residential, but no doubt there'll be scope for a couple of pints and/or a curry during the evenings.

Any recommendations? The actual training centre is at Westfield Road, Wakefield, WF1 3QZ, if that makes any difference.

Westgate if you want trendy pubs/bars..........Boons at bottom of westgate for real ale, Indian Palace not too bad for curry., all within walking distance of that postcode

Aaah, good old Bishopgarth.....

Hopefully they've given it a lick of paint since last time I was there (Admittedly about 6 years ago...) and the doors in the dorm block aren't exacly the quietest closing in the world, so hopefully you're not a light sleeper.

And I agree with the choice of pubs / food. Not much else to do around Wakey on a night, though.

Mex Cantina is a quality Mexican restaurant just off Westgate in the town centre (almost opposite the train station down a side road.) Plenty of pubs around that area often filled with plenty of chav totty come Friday/Saturday night!

Wakefield town centre (no offense to anyone from there) is a dump. Leeds is a short drive away.

Been out in Leeds a few times, but not planning to do any driving during the week.

Not sure whether I'll get out or not - I have a nasty feeling we'll be getting homework.

I would suggest Mex Cantina as has been already suggested, Havana on the same street if you are there for friday night.

Beluga is a nice bar in the same vicinity, smart dress required but probably the nicest place in Wakefield.

If you are at all into proper beer, there is a great little microbrewery/pub tucked away down Kirkgate called Fernandes Brewery Tap. Westgate in general is probably fine if you are under 19.

There used to be a pub (which shall remain nameless, but is now a block of flats anyway) which got the nickname 'playschool' because if you were over 16 you were probably way too old to be in there. Classy place.
