I bought a bottle of Smirnoff and 42 Below Vodka the other week. Both were put in the freezer at the same time in the same draw.

Tonight I got them out and noticed that the Smirnoff is nearly frozen solid whereas the 42 Below is just slightly thicker and was wondering why..?

Is it that the better quality the vodka the less it freezes..?

Whats teh best vodka..? wasnt too impressed with Grey Goose and thats expensive.

The higher the ethanol content - the lower the freezing point.

I would have thought that the 42Below would be far superior to Smirnoff.

quality NZ marketing, helped a little bit by Bacardi now of course.

We sort of supply them with some of their packaging ... very down to earth people, now very down to earth rich people.

You've just reminded me of the lab days making 70% ethanol and storing it in the freezers - PROPER gloopy it was. Ever since I've been disappointed that vodka never gets anywhere close to that viscosity.

Although I'm sure my liver wouldn't be so upset....

I remember the drinks business doing taste tests on vodka, but can't remember for the life of me which came top.

42Below is rated very highly, and for a non vodka drinker, it is pretty good.

Grey Goose or Ketel One.

Absolut is a good cooking vodka. Smirnoff is for tramps (shoeless tramps rather than ankle chain tramps)

Grey Goose Mandarin and Absolut Mandarin are both divine.

Mind you the Stoly Peach has its moments, Peach Kamikaze's, yes they're bent as a nine bob note but they do the job.

I got a large bottle of Belvedere Vodka on my birthday, terrific stuff from what I have had.

Don't know how much it costs but it does a good job biggrin

laugh thanks everyone, I like Absolute as well but just got the smirnoff as it was on offer.

If 42Below is as good as everyone says then I might just have to crack it open tonight. It wasn't cheap but not too expensive.

Now the honey vodka sounds yum as I love Mead (must get a few bottles, anyone know where to get it from..?)

Roll on 7pm tonight when I shall be sampling the 42Below smile

Lovely bloke, lovely mead.

He's a glasto regular, has a tent just behind the Jazz Stage.

Very much recommended.

That Russian standard's good, all my vodka drinking mates swear by it, quite inexpensive too if i'm thinking of the right one.

Imperia is the 'expensive' one - about £30 a bottle so same as Grey Goose et al. It is rather rare though, not sure I've ever seen it in a bricks & mortar shop
