Everyone's talking about how Band G/gas guzzlers/SUVs etc have dropped in price; well, here's a case in point.

Came back from skiing this March thinking that what I really wanted/needed was an Audi Q7 (no observations on that required for the purposes of this thread, thanks!). Anyway, checked a few prices and at that time there was nothing below c. £37k, which is not far below list price, and this particular car was said to hold it's price very well.

Out of curiosity, I looked again today. Q7s, with under 30k miles, now start at £22k!! That's a fairly phenomenal drop by anyone's standards. Whilst I'm quite sure that the only way currently to dispose of any V8 HSV-derived car would be to give it away, it just goes to show that it's not just us!

I've been keeping an eye on Range Rovers ,for the wife ( her next car of choice ) the latest shape (which has been running from 2002) was set at around £18,000 about 10 months ago for a 2002 model, these are now selling for around £10,000 too £12,000 . You can even pick up 3 year old £60,000 ( new ) motors for £15,000 - £18,000. Bring on the crunch

But would you want to be seen in a Range Rover or anything made by VAG?

A question of taste being asked on a Vauxhall forum?!

Don't worry so much about residules dropping away faster than normal, everything is pro rata, so your beast has lost an extra 10K but in most cases the replacment you are looking at has also.

When I bought my ro I had a difficult sports car to sell, so I took a 10K bloody nose on that to shift it, but off set the loss by getting 10K off the price of the ro.

So all in all "evens stevens" and lets face it from Monday another 2.5 % off hehe Oh and pro rata that and thats another 2.5% off of your residule. (Thanks Gordon you are a Darling)

I know someone who has just bought a Mercedes S-class, 1 year old, for virtually half the new retail price.

Further down the scale, I recently bought myself a new everyday car, a 57-plate Astra 1.8 SRi automatic, pre-registered by Vauxhall Motors with only 400-odd miles on the clock. New retail is about £18k (though I fully realise that no-one in their right mind would pay anything like that). I reckon at less than £7.5k I've got a bargain. An auto SRi isn't the best combination but it was too cheap to leave there.

So prices are all over the place in various sectors of the market.

You only have to trawl through PH to see the effect the economy is having on car prices, some right bargains now compared to the market a year ago! TBH though I am supprised how well the Ro has done, most 6ltr cars are around the 20k mark still and by the look of it I have only lost about 12k on mine, alot but a darn site less than I would have lost if Id bough an M5 or RS4 etc so Im happy. VXR8's however seem to be getting hit very hard! Less than a year old cars going for low 20k! WTF.

Not really a surprise, the giant Vectra is never going to hold up like a Ro.. It's good to know that 'taste' survives in times of trouble...

Cheapest official forecourt price is £24.5k, auction £21k (£1300 fall in Nov.). I don't like diesels but if money was no object I wouldn't mind giving the v12 turbo a try - makes the Cayenne look tame.

Mate has an Audi diesel allroad which manages to lose more each month then my gas guzzling 5.7 he,he - I've suggested he gets an RS4 (same dep. bags more fun). Some Astons and Bentleys are shedding up to £3.8k a month - ouch.

For us, December prices show only the VXR8 as losing money - £1670 on the early ones.

I doubt the global meltdown cares much for "taste". Your giant Calibre will go the same way!

A Monaro is like Robocop, timeless and something you can enjoy time and again
A VXR8 is like Robocop 2, Better special effects more modern but not quite the same as the original Robocop.

Likewise I'm gonna keep the giant Vectra too. Just going to mod the nuts off it in the new year. Suspension - Ripshift - Supercharger. Then I'll keep it till it dies on me!
