Decided to check my local BBC new section thing before heading to bed.
Really wish I hadn't now. Found this little article in the Cambs section:

Basically people are really annoyed about car parking charges increasing at Cambride's hospital.
Check out part of the statement by their spokesperson:
"We also have to make it fair for people who do not drive. If parking was free we would be effectively subsidising car owners."

It must be a fking fancy car park if it costs £2 million a year to maintain. Someone's being royally shafted, im guessing the one sorry looking man in the high viz doesn't get to keep all the dough...? I mean i can understand there point about subsidising car users, maybe 25p or so an hour would be fairer... 1.80 is an absoloute pisstake, a tax on the sick.

I rushed to the hospital but forgot to bring any change for the carpark - and I saw clampers in operation when I got there. I will not comment on the end of this story because there are too many expletives! Needless-to-say, I'm not a fan of Tax payers (who finance hospitals) having to pay car park charges to watch their nearest and dearest suffer and pass away. This, I believe, is just plain wrong!

Have commented on this sort of thing before but worth airing again.
Now know of two new hospitals where the initial planning application went in, with plans and funding for a correctly sized car park based on a properly researched and worked up estimate of numbers of users.
In both cases the plans were turned down because councillors decreed that the car park size must be reduced in order to encourage/force people to use public transport.
Now both these hospitals, whilst being near-ish to a town or city are actually the major hospital serving a wide and largely rural area. The public transport across the wider area is not sufficient for people to use pubic transport (no spelling mistake btw) so the car parks become full.
Solution, build a bigger car park? Nah install a charging system with, at times, punitive charges and clamping.
Anyway back to the article. If the hospital does not benefit from the charges, who does? Silly question I know, and can any connection be proven between hospital administrators / councillors and the car park operating company? Potential for a nice wedge of graft and brown paper envelopes there I reckon.

Thats really bad of them - I know that Northampton hospital runs a scheme like that and thats partially why I don't mind paying the charges when I do have to go there on the basis that someone who needs it gets it for free and especially as a family member is currently undergoing chemo.
Although it is a pain, I agree with car parking charges. The hospital with have a budget, mainly gained from selling their services to PCT's, who can shop around for the best deals on procedures, and any monioes being spent on carpark, building, admin costs, isnt going on medical care. Hospitals need to recover some of those costs, and I am afraid car drivers is the easiest, and probably one of the very few, options open to the hospitals. I suspect they will also be looking at selling franchises for coffee shops etc, but I am not totally sure if they can.
I suppose you have to ask, would I want the money going on medical care for my sick relative, or some of it syphoned off to cover the maintenance of the car park etc, so I can park free?

Car parking is an essential for sick people and distressed relatives, it's an outrage that it's charged against people who are most likely at a low ebb financially with the extra traveling they need to fund, plus most likely at a time a bread winner from the family is unable to earn any money or are on restricted income due to time off work. People don't visit Hospitals for the fun of it you know!

The sooner it is binned and replaced by private insurance schemes the better.
Worst medical care and service in any of the developed world countries I have been to and been treated in at least 7 i can think of just now.
Pathetic bunch of cynical rip off cowboys who i hope die horrible deaths in their cockroach ridden sewers of hospials and ge clamped and towed to boot.
BUt of course, no all the people that are on these boards making these decisions go private, dont they?

They have probably skewed the figures because they could have sold the land to a developer and now pretend they are losing the equivalent income every year. king fancy car park if it costs £2 million a year to maintain. I am apoplectic with RAGE!Hospitals did not used to charge.
They make a fortune out of car parks in hospitals, that's why the charge. End of.
Remember this though, the Doctors and Nurses also pay car park fees (albiet at a reduced rate). A friend of mine can just about afford to run a car, but then can't use it for work because she can't afford to pay parking on top !!
