Outrigger conundrum
Discussion
After many hours of effort I’ve managed to clean up the outriggers on my 98 Chimaera and am about to paint them. Aside from just trying to spray up into the gap between outrigger and bodywork has anyone managed to work out a way (without body lift) to ensure that the hidden tops of the outriggers do get a proper coat of paint?
I did think about getting hold of some very thin plastic sheet to slide up around the bodywork surrounding the outriggers to protect the body when spraying but that still won’t ensure the tops of the tubes will get properly covered, and also I can’t find any suitable plastic sheeting.
Any hard-won experience gratefully received !

When I did mine I painted them in white hamerite, as they are availiable in spray tins. If you get hold of a tin like WD40 it comes with a little tube that goes into the spray cap, I found one the same type as the hammerite tin then heated up the little pipe and bent at 45-75 degrees then you can poke the pipe up the side of the out rigger and spray along the top that with one of those little inspection mirros you can see what has been painted. Did the same with the primer.
Another thing I did after painting, was to fit a couple of open cell foam blocks on top of the out rigger in each wheel arch this stops alot of the stones being pushed down the gap between the rigger and body. Then every so often you can just pull them out for cleaning.

I used a PCI blanking plate from a PC bent into a hook with some self adhesive foam pads stuck on the inside. Load it up with paint and away you go.
Bear in mind that the most vulnerable areas like the corner plates need something like a sprayable wax as no way (that I know of) to get paint in there reliably.

Thanks for the info guys. Current plan is to use some thin plastic sheeting to protect the bodywork surrounding the outriggers and then spray Epoxy Mastic 121 up towards the top of the outriggers as best as possible, and also into the innaccesible areas, other areas I'll brush the EM on. Hopefully most of it wil stick to the chassis, and not me......
