I'm considering a F355 and i was wondering what is the balance between good mileage and value? If a car has Full Ferrari Service History and say 47k miles on it should it be avoided say against a car with nearly perfect service history but 20k miles which is 10k more to buy?

any of you lot had any experiences with this type of thing? the reason i ask is because i'm buying it to drive it so i'm going to put 30k miles on the clock anyway going abroad etc so is it worth me spending the extra to buy the low miuleage car when i'm going to put a load of miles on anyway?

any thoughts / shared experiences would be very welcome. SWorry i posted in general but based upon advice i thought id repost here.

I'd also welcome anything specific to look out for.

I know to get a full check and i've been reading about the manifolds and the rattling exhaust valve etc any extra advice from previous owners would be most welcome!

Well mine has done 38ish and the interior looks like :

So if your 20k example looks much worse than this then its either clocked or not looked after very well !!!

It was the best by far somehow the slightly higher milage 32-40k cars and the very real low ones circa 5-10k seemed the best when I bought mine there were loads of cars that seemed to have been at 22k for years !!!

There are also a couple with 60k and 100K + kicking about

I would say aim for something with early 40's as they are probably the best value if you can find a good one

Thanks Phib.

The car has just over 45k miles on it and has ful service history, i'm presuming that use is better then non use? I remember in my low mileage 911 turbo i had to payfor a new gearbox the interior looks perfect and i have to say your car looksfantastic also.

is there anything specific i should look for?

I wouuld get a good inspection depending where you are Qv in Ascot are very very good wouldnt take the car anywhere else.

Make sure you have a compression test, its not really the height of the value that you are looking for but the uniformity of the cyl readings.

Also check for rust on the bottom of the front wings on the coach line.

there are loads of other things to look for, if you do a search on here you should find loads of info.

47k + 30k = a lot, not many people will touch one with that mileage when you come to sell. At 77k you must be getting close to an engine rebuild of some sort which can stretch into 5 figures.

BUT sod all that, buy it and enjoy it.

Many 355's have done a lot more mileage than what it says on the odometer. When I was looking there was a massive variance in the wear patterns for the interiors of the cars I looked at.

As I remember there were some cars for sale a while ago that had seen predominantly track use and had clocked up over 100k miles each of track use and were still going strong.

1st rule of 355 purchase-get an inspection from a recognised specialist!!!

You have been warned!

Good points there chaps. I was thinking of kust keeping really. i'm not spending 50k on the car so it's not into me for a load of money. My plan was to evenutally give it to my son .. "who can pay for the engine rebuild if he wants to drive it " LOL...... smile

There's an incentive to get to work !!!

IMO People wont touch them because of posts like this.
I know of 12k miles 360 Modenas that needed engine rebuilds. So hand up who have had or NEEDED there 355 engines rebuilt soley because of milage of over 70k miles then.

Why did the 360's need rebuilt at 12k? Neglect I suspect, coolant leak not checked? oil leak not checked? These engines are strong and should not go pop at 12k I must say not heard of any.
I do know that the 430 engine in Joe Macari's service centre reception (made into a table) came out of a car that was driven on after a burst water pipe until it seized. Pipe was riped off by being driven over something on the road not failure.

once you've hit around 80K of road usage, it's a good time to start racing these cars in the various classic series. A well maintained unit will still be pulling strong over 100K.

Most people that really know the 355 engine, mainly specialists that Ive spoken to rave about how solid they are. Its only the electrics that are the problem.

Wrong, there was a batch of 1999-2000 360 that threw out crank bearings at very low mileage. Ferrari knew about this problem but had no recall. They just used different spec bearings. Check with Shiltec ferrari http://www.shiltech-ferrari.com/ they did one of my close mates, so i know because it cost him. And i was there as Richard explained it to me while showing me. Ask for Jeff or Richard, they will confirm what i have just said. Things are not always the way they seem.
Like i said, Hands up who have had or NEEDED there 355 engines rebuilt solely because of mileage of over 70k miles. What went wrong or did it let go if at all? I bet we dont get many. Never heard of any let go at over 70kmiles. They just keep on going.
One can be cynical and say that a lot of 355s dont crawl over the 40k miles mark because of clocking. So the 70 mile plus cars are out there in disguise.
