I want to bloody kill someone
Discussion
The phone goes as I get out of the gym yesterday morning. I notice about 9 missed calls. It's the voicemail calling - police, shortly followed by Lady Flash's dad.
There's been an accident. My darling girlfriend has been in an accident. She's unconscious, and in on the way to hospital - they got our numbers out of her purse.
In moments like this, your heart actually feels like it has stopped, and then as if someone's jump started it suddenly with a car battery. No matter what jokery I've posted on here, or mistakes I have made (and there have been many), this girl means the world to me and at the moment of thinking that I'm losing her, I realise just how much. Hearing her Dad being calm, brave, organised but obviously hugely worried on the phone makes me realise that this is serious - this is a man I respect and admire hugely, who has lived life on his terms, achieved so much, and who has put his family first all of the time, dealing with every challenge thrown at him with certainty and confidence. And for the first time ever (and I've known him for 16 years), he sounds like he's bricking it.
The taxi ride to the hospital is a long one. I'm the first there. She's in surgery. The rest of the family arrive, looking shellshocked and worried. I talk to the police and doctors - the car is a write-off; the airbags saved her life, but there are some fairly worrying internal injuries; they think the seatbelt failed to hold her properly. She's going to be all right, and thankfully no permanent, life-threatening injuries. It transpires that she swerved to avoid the foreign driver who looked the wrong way when haring out of a side road without stopping, pulling directly into her path. In so doing, she saved his life too, rather than T-boning his side of the car at 40mph. But in so doing she swerved into the path of opposing traffic, so her car hit his a glancing blow, but poughed into a parked car head on, barely slowing. The idiot walked free, while my girl is unconscious, recovering from quite a lot of surgery. It just doesn't seem quite real - I made her a cup of tea before getting on my bicycle and cycling off to the gym, before she got into her car for her usual, banal commute to the school she teaches in.
I spoke to her this morning, when she came round. She's in pain, and scared, and badly shaken. Her biggest fears are about how worried we muct all be, losing her car, how embarrassing it muct have been to be seen naked by everyone when they cut her clothes off (women - honestly!), and how sorry she is for causing such a fuss. By this stage I'm actually crying. Oh, and she's hoping the other driver's OK.
OK? I want ro rip the f
ker's inept heart right out of his stupid chest.
She's in a private hospital. I'm next door, trying to work on my laptop while she's asleep, and keep my mind off it. Shall be doing a couple of other things today - booking us a bloody nice holiday somewhere hot for December, once she can travel, and messing around on here to keep back the crushing rage.
I've never nearly lost someone I loved before. It's pretty sobering.

My deepest sympathies mate, I know exactly how you feel, right down to the aching pain in the back of your throat.
I also nearly lost my wife early last year after she suffered sudden internal bleeding, it was fully touch and go and seeing her being wheeled into the op theatre is something i'll never forget, even now it makes me well up, to think i may have never seen her again.
One op and 4 blood transfusions later she was fine, even though she looked as white as a sheet she still managed a smile from me being stupid as usual.
Best wishes to the both of you, i hope you OH has a speedy recovery

Seriously you lot - take as much care as you can out there. The aftermath of one of these things is horrific. And thanks - I can't really yell at anyone as I've got to be calm, reassuring and efficient here, so some ranting on PH helps!
Hate seeing her like this - she looks so young and vulnerable in that bed, with all the injuries. Christ.

As proved, it doesn't matter how safe you drive, there will always be some Hate seeing her like this - she looks so young and vulnerable in that bed, with all the injuries. Christ.
