Inspired by my recent purchase of a E320 CDI Avantgarde my father in law is looking for an E class but is more concerned with trim levels than the engine. He is erring towards the E220 but I was a bit worried that it would be underpowered, harder to sell and I can only see them in an Elegance trim.
So, bearing in mond he does 3000 miles a year so fuel type isn't an issue, he has a free tax disc under disability, what is the best option to get the best trim level, and still have enough poke? Probably looking at a 2-3 year old car.
E220/40/70/80 or the whole hog 320?

My E220cdi certainly doesn't feel underpowered, plenty of shove and I can't speak highly enough about it, however if you're looking at 2-3 yr old cars beware that pre July 06 the 220 diesel engine was down 20bhp, 50lb/ft of torque and at least l.5-2 secs slower to 60, so I'd imagine a pre July 06 220 isn't the engine to go for.
If he does low mileage and has his tax paid for why not go for a large petrol engined car, I imagine sellers will be struggling to shift these right now and therefore they're ripe for good discounts to be had.
In terms of trim I personally don't like elegance, the very woody trim, smaller wheels, beige interiors etc just look a bit grandad to me, if i couldn't get an Avantgarde I'd go for a classic with a few choice extras.
