Might get a bit of stick for this but I'm going to the 'mickey mouse' stage at the millenium stadium. It's fairly pointless in the scheme of things for the rally results, but it's usually good fun. I might head over to one of the stages on saturday morning, but only if I can work out a way of getting to one without having to pay the extortionate entry fees
5 or 6 of us aiming for Halfway and Crychan on the Saturday. Depending on the weather and how knackered we are come Friday evening, we'll either drive up late Friday or get up very early on the Saturday.
Two cars: a black Monaro VXR supercharged and a much more humble Astra Estate (but guess which one is better for kipping in!).

ITS FEKIN COLD! seriously recent temps around these stages are dropping to -6 at night! if your kipping in cars or vans god love you. I was driving to work this morning at 9am and it was minus 2!.

Still, I always reckoned that rallying is a participation sport that requires commitment, whether driving, servicing or just watching. Timing will be everything: early enough to get to one's place of choice but not so early as to have to kill hours of doing nothing in the freezing cold. That said, some of my best RAC memories are of the Welsh forests in the pre-dawn dark with the rutted mud frozen hard beneath your boots. And then watching heroes in rally cars attack them at full chat. It's been a while - the last time I did this it was still BDA Escorts with the odd Stratos and even a works Saab 96 - but I'm looking forward to seeing it all again.

I'm really saddened by the fact you are expected to PAY to watch the stages.As a first timer to a rally event, can someone please advise, what stages should I try to get to, do you get tickets for each stage? How long are you normally standing in one place for?
Sorry for all the questions, been to plenty F1, Moto GP etc but never Rally.

There is a fair bit of standing about, but you can use the time to explore the forest and get to better vantage points along the stage. Just be aware that although it's often easiest to get about by walking on the stage, a car could appear at any moment.
Parking is generally along the verges of narrow muddy forest tracks. Aim to arrive at least 2 hours before first runs, even on the early morning stages. Arrive later and you'll have a longer walk or even not get in at all for stages like Port Talbot. The only place I'm aware of where you can push it a bit is Walters Arena which has a huge car park and is a bit more of a "spectator" stage.
Facilities tend to be quite poor and are just by the car parks. You're on your own once you start to explore.

Tickets can be bought for the whole event, or for a whole day. Worth a bit of time reading the guides and looking at the maps to decide what is best for you.
Try and visit service at least once too - the works teams are amazing to watch and you can get very close to the drivers etc.
Have a search for some of the home videos on YouTube of last year - they'll give you an idea of the views, conditions, and just how many clothes the spectators have to wear to keep warm and dry in Wales in December....

kING MUCH ! Back in the good old Lombard days when it were a rally for real drivers etc etc it was £2 per CAR per stage! £30 to tramp around it the mud to see a car for three seconds, what has the world come to? no wonder the stages look empty these days.
