It's bad enough, jah?
Spent a lot of time in and around Durban, which is bad enough, and, I'm led to believe, nicer than Jo'burg. I'd think very carefully about it if I were you. Lovely place (going on business again in Jan) but just not safe/stable enough for me to want to live there.

I've never lived there but my recruitment business has a constant stream of well-educated South Africans with good jobs over there absolutely desperate to come over here for a huge pay and status cut, many of them citing their third armed car jack or similar this year as their reason. Draw your own conclusions.I considered a holiday there earlier this year. Did a bit of research and unless you go to a fully-contained resort (what's the point?) it's one of the most lawless places on earth.
The Police are no use whatsoever; they are either in the pay of local gangs or just so overwhelmed they dare not get involved.
Regular scam is to get locals to befriend foreigners who then tell of safe places to go. Guess what happens when you get there?

I have a few relatives out in Kempton Park, Jo'burg and they've been victims of crime. Both my cousins had 3-Series BMWs and were carjacked outside their own drive whilst waiting for the electric gates to swing open within the space of a few weeks. Both cars amazingly were recovered. It isn't the safest place in the world, that is for sure!

heard some truelly appalling stories of how someone knew at least 3 of her friends that had been raped when she lived there, nearly all her friends had been mugged/car jacked at one point or another, most carry guns now and all this by the time she was 23....

Oh and if they manage to complete the stadiums for the World cup, I'll be amazed. Everything is 'tomorrow, tomorrow'. Lazy bazzers....
Well my younger brother really likes joburg and has lived there for around 3/4yrs now and so far has been crime free and considering some of the stuff he had to do when trining as an attorney I am surprised he hasnt yet been a victim.
Yes there is crime. Is it getting worse? Well thats a d@mn good question I dont know.
Rule 1 is dont drive a fancy car like a bmw audi etc and you should be reasonably safe.
As for Durban well it's a bit like brighton but with lots more crime, drugs and sunshine.

I've spent a lot of time down there this year - about 2 months worth...
I'm angling for a job down in SA, but only if they pay me my current salary and allow me to live in CT, and commute to Joburg for meetings.
Everyone knows someone who has been a victim of crime, but it's fairly easy as a visitor to avoid...

No. Drive something cr@p like an old toyota/vw and they want to hijack you so they can strip the car for spares. They may just decide to hijack you simply because they are tired of walking...Also, distances are big, speeds are high and fatal crashes are very common so having a half decent, safe, reliable and reasonably powered car is a must. The last thing you want in that country is to break down in a reomte area-I know.
It's not just the hijacking that is the problem but the level of violence used even if you do not put a fight. Let's not get started on how high the violent rape stats are in that place.
That's what really gets me about that country.
It's honestley a great place-maybe one of the best places to live in the world, but the price is the crime rate.
The politics are rubbish but that is standard all over the globe nowdays...
Joburg. One of the hospitals, on the outskirts, is used by military surgeons as field hospital training. Because the number of shootings is so high. In the same way South Central LA hospital is used. It's a weird place. Had some guys from Joburg over here last year, they knew London quite well as they had been over here when they were exiled during apartheid. Not been back for a few years. They just kept saying how nice it was to walk just about anywhere without worrying. They also had a great interest in dogs. The bigger the better, for home security. All three of them had two dogs at home for protection.
When ever I'm over there, the collapse of the old downtown area seems greater each visit. I was amazed to discover the valet parking guy, at one place we went to eat, was armed. Off duty cop I thought. He would not let us walk to our cars after the meal, even though we could see them. Not for the tip either, he refused one.
