Just a question really. I have long admired from a distance ultimas but recently have got slightly fixated on the bmw V10.

Anybody think it would be possible to fit the v10 to an ultima?

the smg conversion will be interesting to watch.

-machine off front of existing smg bellhousing casting, all the way back to the input bearing support face.

- mill out a new bell housing and diff support case. tempting to order nine inch components from the states id imagine.

- new input and lay shafts machined up. need to be extended such that the input shaft now travels through dif case, and lay shaft extended through to drive the crown wheel. this would also nesesitat another hole in the front of the existing smg case.

- plug original lay shaft output hole and posibly design in a way of adjusting the backlash on the pinon gear. this part it where i am conceptually stuck at present.

seems do able though.
there was a similar thread on GT40s a while back.

Hang ten are you proposing to remove the smg system?

I personally would leave as is. Two reasons firstly i quite like paddles it means my hands are always on the wheel and i am always very in control.Secondly and much more importantly removing the smg aspect would be hugely costly and complex due to both mechanical electrical and the wiring.
Certainly i think it would make more sense to leave the smg as is.

It cannot be left as is - you have to turn it into a transaxle.

Ok i think im with you here. Basically in the m6 gearbox is mounted behind the engine with a driveshaft etc and obviously this is not possible with the ultima.
So it means a complete re jig of the whole setup but would it be possible to keep the smg do you think as in retrospect it seems that would be inlikely as everything would be, well back to front basically.

Actually just given it some more thought and surely the gallardo engine and g box are best bet in this scheme as this should be a near straight transplant?

no i was talking about converting the SMG box into an SMG transaxle. basicaly adding a a diff between the engine and the gearbox. you need to fabricate or machine a diff housing and new gearbox input and lay (pinon for transaxle) shafts and modify the existing SMG box to make it happen.

thanks for the Link S62. i had looked at it a while back when it was just a heading in the projects page. will have to keep more of an eye in it now. this could be interesting to watch.

Don't knock it till you've tried it.

Second cheapest car ive ever bought £200 and was I think my favourite car out of them all. Looked horrid (white and very very square) and sunroof eventually started leaking after about 6 months BUT once I knocked the pipe off the silencer on a speed bump it sounded fantastic and actually went pretty damn swiftly too. drivingbiggrin

Just a shame it was killed by a stone to the windscreen. £200 quid to keep a 200 quid car on the road meant i scrapped it.
