Simple enough question or is it? I need to get a good spanner for doing the plugs tomorrow as the space is rather tight under the bay. Other than taking the engine cover off is there any other tips to make the job as easy as possible? I'm looking at a 1.35 gap too

BAck to spanners any recommendations as my current socket set looks like it was not designed for the tight areas of a v8

Its a bit tight but nothing major, just take your time you will get there in the end. I just use the usual socket set.

From the back you'll get the tricky ones out of the way first.

Cover the wings so you don't scratch the paint or wear clothes without sharp objects. The rear plugs on each bank are a bit tricky to get to but with a flexi joint won't resist for long. The other 6 are a doddle. Easy peasy.

yours would be easier as you dont have the water resevoir as the earlier LS1's but getting at the rear two on eitehr side was a swine but the hardest of them all was the one near the airbox due to the cabling around it

Job would have been easier if I had my ratchet which I lost, instead, I used a breaker bar.

Result is the knock that hard started to creep in is no longer there so timing is now back to commanded but got a very strange result at teh dyno run on Saturday

What do you mean strange result?
What result did you get? Did'nt know it was a dyno day! Was it good? Do you miss you MR2?

LOL reminded me of a joke to which the punchline was
'I don't know what it is but it feels champion to me'

strange result is that it was 60 down on what was recoreded at vixpys (admittedly that was fwhp) but it was almost 30 down at teh wheels - nothings changed so there must be dyno variations which I'm trying to bottm out.

Timing, fueling, MAF calibration (yes Richard!!) everythings the same car wise... still it was good to find a very nice local dyno setup using dynodynamics. Their hourly rate is good, the guys friendly so I might grab myself a roadrunner - or see if Richard will hire me one for a day biggrin

I sold my roadrunner to a chap called Terry. But by golly its excellent on the dyno!

Whats the dyno charges? And where?

You can do bidirectional timing changes with the standard tool anyway. So its not too bad. You will just have to make a note in a spreadsheet of the ideal value and move on, then adjust the table afterwards and reflash. The E38 is worse, all you can do is dial in up to 6* of spark retard.

Its 45 for an hour, vixpy is going to look at my latest graph once its scanned in ot see if he seens anything obviousl The only thing that springs to mind is either the ratio calibration or AT/IT calcs. The important numbers are at the bottom of the graph.

I could do bidi but tbh I might just take the RR hit and go that way, whack in the lc-1 and see how it goes. I'm actualy more than happy with how the car is running so chasing a few headline hp or ft/lb isnt what its about, its about optimising it and I think the RR is the way to go biggrin
