So, if you’ve got breakdown cover, who is it with and why did you chose them over the competition?

TYIA for replies.

RAC, Used to be with AA and had a major mechanical breakdown with my Skyline. AA was called out and towed it to Nissan. However it was a franchise and they were going bust so could not repair it.
The AA would not move the car twice for the same breakdown.

Then joined the RAC - £70
Coincidently I had to call them a week after joining to take the car from Aberdeen to Wigan for a specialist rebuild.... (would have cost £400 plus otherwise)

Funny thing was it was the same breakdown company that collected the car on both occasions.

been with the AA for 8 years now.. Great service.
Been towed from atrack following engine problem, then had no problems towing the car to Peninsula whilst also shipping me back to hampshire.

also when the Crank snapped, they were gewred to take the car back to Wales, I asked them to drop me off in Andover, and take the car once again to peninsula.. no problems.

Been with the AA for what feels like forever ... I don't usually call on them very often but this year I've called on them twice - once when the muppets at my local Peugeot garage "fixed" my wifes car and left the power steering pipe rubbing against the auxiliary drive belt which obviously wore through and caused the power steering to fail on her way home from work ... second time was last week when the battery died on my V40.

Usually the guys that come out are pretty damn good - I've rarely had a jobsworth and usually they will turn a blind eye to a little bit of bending the rules. The guy that came out to my wifes car whipped out some hose and jury rigged a repair in about 20 minutes - he also wrote up a brief report on what he had found to be the cause of the problem (without directly saying outright that he thought it was the garages fault) - helped us get the garage to fix their cock-up without a fight!

If you're with the AA it's worth taking their Parts & Labour Cover as well £48 per annum - covers up to £1500 worth of repairs in the year.

If you are considering the AA, it might be worth reading this first:

I've been very happy with the AA. Originally made the choice since they are happy picking cars up from track days (and it's happened twice for me....)

I've had one fault with the Griff since I've had it, and the AA came out quickly and repaired it on the spot. It wasn't obvious either - the fuel pump stopped working but the relay and fuse appeared to be OK. The fuse however had been forced into the socket, bending the legs and arcing across, thus even though there was no break, there was enough voltage drop to prevent the pump working.

Also, the AA have their own fleet of flatbed trucks and drivers who know how to use them. Not really a prob for a Griff but certainly was helpful when I had my Noble, which is very low to the ground.

I agree with jigs.

i sent this in thursday as part of a similar queation.

What I would recommend to anyone in the AA, is to add 'parts and labour' cover to there breakdown policy. It costs £52 for the year, can claim up to £500 per claim and up to 3 claims per year. It will only pay out however, if you've had to get them out and they cant repair your car and they have to tow it to a garage. If the fault is through part failure, as was the case with my clutch, then they'll pay out. They paid more than Warranty Holdings and I'd only been in it 3 weeks.
They paid £404.

AA cover here.

I have not had to use them so no comment on good/bad or indifferent. When looking around heard good and bad about AA & RAC.

Greenflag and through insurance company didn't seem to offer the same level of service, ie car only covered, not the person, which when driving more than one car seemed better.

Made up my mind when found I could get discount to join through my company, may not be the best reason but....

(only got cover when I became a pround TVR owner . Listened to much to the stories of unreliability obviously)

With the RAC under a family membership, covers father, mother, brother and myself. When I was driving the mini, they picked me up from everywhere Lancaster, Purley, Brighton and towed me back to London. And came out in under an hour last week when I locked the keys for the Tiv in my boot!

The AA recover from track days, where-as the RAC and Green Flag have told me that they won't.

Might be of use if you're into tracking at all...

Otherwise I find them much of a muchness, and both AA and RAC ignore requests fro flatbeds generally..

Mind you, don't expect them to come and help if you plough through a gravel trap into armco
