Now, I am not that old, early 20s, majority of the people I used to go to school with a few years ago always thought that having a fun time = drinking and that having a good time without booze was impossible.
Now, was this just my peer group, or is it actually a more accurate view of youngsters as a whole?
Was binge drinking and going out every weekend and getting "lashed" always the fashion or is it something that emerged over the last 10-15 years?

I would say that's what most of my friends would think, although I wouldn't say they binge drink. I do know a few girls who you could say binge drink.
I like drinking, although I prefer staying in with friends and doing it than out in bars and clubs, mainly because it's cheaper and I can't be bothered with the irritating sterotypes that bars are always full of. I do know however that I don't have to drink to have fun.
Offered the choice between something like a trackday with some mates and our cars and a night out, I'd choose the trackday. I'm a bit bored of clubs and bars and I'd rather do something more constructive, interesting and different with my time/money.

In answer to the OP's question, I think it depends on who you hang out with. When I was 18 yes, we used to drink before we went out and whilst we were out, but the aim was never to get hammered and still isn't. The aim was always to have a good time, and that tended to centre about choosing the right clubs and, for those luckier than myself, finding the right women
