Gutted. Started it up and it beeped at my 3 times and switched off with the red light flashing at me.

BUT

i rang the nice people at Sony and they are sending out a new one, even though i bought it on the release date (nearly 2 years ago).

Problem is GT5P is inside (which i cant get out), and i have lost all my game saves and game updates.

EDIT: i dont know how the get the daft grin off, thats not how i feel!!!)

Swap the old hdd into the new ps3, back it up onto something, slap the new drive back in and copy the backup on idea

ETA I've read you can get stuck disks out by using a bent paper clip to hook the hole in the middle

when they pick the dead one up they are giving my the new one, so i wont have chance.

The backing it up sounds interesting though. is there a way of doing it, considering i cant get onto the cross media bar or anything?

Hrm, ask a mate if you can borrow their ps3 and swap it in?

Of course this is assuming the hdd isn't what's caused yours to die in the first place!

That sounds reasonable. Im wondering if it is the HDD that the blame though, as it wont even make an attempt to read it, and it sounds different when it starts

Well you can copy your save games on to a usb stick and back on to the new machine.

Don't ask me how though, I did it once and it was mainly by accident! But you can do it.

Do however make sure that your "old" ps3 is fully updated (both machine and games) before doing the saves as otherwise when you come to try to use them on the "new" machine they won't work. Both machines need to be at the same point in evolution update wise. The simple way to do this is make sure both are up to date.
