I've just connected an Ipod Nano via a stereo jack-to-jack cable to the AUX socket in the rear of a RR Vogue. You can only just hear it with the volume on both the Ipod and Stereo turned to their highest settings. Am I missing something? Has anyone got this configuration to work?

If its like the system on the new Defender then the socket just lets you listen to whatever is playing on the ipod and you have to use the controls on the ipod itself to change tracks, albums etc.

I ended up ripping the whole system out and starting again with a Becker system so I can control the ipod from the car radio.

This is how I expected the Ipod to operate but there is either a loading mismatch or a lack of power somewhere that is preventing proper output/volume. It's as if it needs an amplifier between the Ipod and the AUX 3.5mm jack socket.

Has anyone made a 3.5mm jack-to-jack connection work with an Ipod or is there a better way?

My 80gb Ipod classic works fine plugged straight into the aux socket on my06 RR vogue, I will try a nano later see how it works.

Thanks Simon - appreciate your help. Mine is a late Nov 05 (06 model) and I am plugging the Ipod in to the AUX behind/between the two front seats. I'm not aware having read the manuals of any other AUX input?

That should work. I have a RR S/C 07 and always use the IPOD with a standard jack in the AUX socker behin the front seats. With volume set to normal on the IPOD and the main screen it works a treat. Could be the cable or potentially wiring fault

This is weird. I've just tried an Ipod nano and it was very quiet even with both volume on Ipod and stereo turned up to the max. So I tried an Ipod shufffle and that was louder, can't get it anywhere near stereo limits but still much louder than nano. As said earlier Ipod classic works fine. Can only assume it's the output of the Ipod's.

If its just a headphone jack-headphone jack you are using then as you adjust the volume on the ipod then this should affect the input volume of the music???(IE try turning up the volume on the ipod and see if this has an affect)

the new ipods have volume limiters on. This is what will be causing the problem. You need to either turn it off with some specialist software, or buy http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/796... this should bypass the limiter as it is being connected to the base of the ipod

Thanks guys.

I've tried setting the volume limiter on the Ipod Nano to max but it makes no difference. I'll give the Ipod base to 3.5mm jack lead a try - it makes sense that this should bypass the limiter.

If you use jack to jack you are using the Ipods internal amp therefore you need the ipod volume turned right up and more than usual volume on the car ICE.

I just bought an X5 which had a jack connecter in the dash pocket and tried the ipod touch on it. Works OK on the Aux setting but you do have to crank up the volume. The problem with that is when you go back to CD or radio the volume is way up high so could blow the speakers etc.

I just ordered one of these (3rd one down)

http://www.flashbacksales.co.uk/acatalog/ipod-dock...

which will bypass the intenal amp and the volume is then controlled by the ICE.

Flashback cables are a little bit more expensive but are very good quality and worth the money in my opinion. I bought one of their ipod dock to 5 pin din cables so I could connect my ipod to my Naim Hi Fi. Having tried a 3.5mm jack to 5 pin din I can honestly say the dock plug to 5 pin din is light years ahead and the only volume control is on the Naim pre-amp.

The Ipod base to 3.5mm jack lead provides much more volume than the Jack-to-Jack lead but is still down on volume compared to the other inputs (radio etc).

I'll probably try the better quality version of the Ipod base to 3.5mm jack lead described above next.
