Looking at getting a Z4 as my next car (after changing my mind i wanted a VX Turbo) and for my budget of about 10k i can just about get an early 3.0i SE manual.
I'm not really into options, the only thing i usually insist upon is leather which it has anyway. Just wondering if any of these options are really worth having, Xenons, wind deflector, premium sound and sports seats (rare on my budget) are ones that spring to mind. Or anything else well worth having?
Also does the 3.0i have more kit as standard compared to the other early models? Only one i can think of is the 6 speed box.
Cheers

Go for heated seats and a wind deflector.

The logic7 hi-fi is supposed to be excellent but don't stress over it. I've got the mid-level one (hi-fi?) and it sounds good too for light rock-dance stuff. Satnav works fine but a little dated now, and the foldy screen can cause problems. Xenons are worth having for sure.

Thanks for that Ben. Ive had a look through, funny how even people who arent into options get carried away when faced with list of choices!
Ellipsoid wheel £740
Xenons £350
Active cruise control £170
HiFi loudspeaker £475
Steering wheel controls £105
Wind deflector £160
Heated seats £230
Those would be my ideal choices. I assume most people would have ticked the cruise and steering wheel controls options since they are so cheap. I can get a wind deflector for £100 on ebay. The wheels i could probably swap without costing too much if i find a car with (the wrong) 18" wheels already.
The HiFi i could probably live without so that just means i need to find a car with Xenons and heated seats

Yer, I'm happy to say that mine had a few of the options on it.
If you check the age, you can fit the Cruise Control yourself. Mine was pre-wired so it cost about 80 quid for the bits and ten minutes of my time.

I also fitted an Aux input for my sterio which was easy and I can now use the iPod.

The standard headlights on the Z4 are pitiful.
On my list of need/wants were xenons, heated leather, carver stereo and wind deflector.
All have been invaluable.
If i had to pick 2, it would be xenons and heated leather.
Carver is awesome but im into my music, and a wind deflector is awfully handy when on motorway etc. Wont matter too much if you are a fair weather only roof down sort of person.
Elipsoids look good, i prefer the 108s personally though.
On top of the above, I have electric folding mirrors and storage pack, neither are particularly useful although saves time in folding the mirrors in the car park.
Oh, also the M sport suspension, i prefer it, some dont.
Dont like sports seats myself, prefer the standard SE seats, more comfortable IMO, again, others dont agree.
Helluva lotta car for £10k - 3.0 has electric memory seats as standard over and above the others IIRC.

Seeing a black one is what made we want a Z4 (in a thoroughly well thought out, considered and grown up way)
Some corrosion issues with 108 star spokes apparently so check carefully.

Sometimes i do with I had gone for black to be honest, and maybe i should have waited but the deal i got was too good to pass up unfortunately, and the spec level was perfect.Seeing a black one is what made we want a Z4 (in a thoroughly well thought out, considered and grown up way)

Heated seats - i would definitely miss them, as i get the roof down at every opportunity and it doesnt take long for your back to get cold. Its also lovely on mornings like this morning.

I bought a Z4MC and I didn't think I'd be using the heated seat feature until I got up at 4am Monday morning to go to work and realised how bloody cold leather seats are when the temperature is -6c Seeing a black one is what made we want a Z4 (in a thoroughly well thought out, considered and grown up way)

I'm nearly 18 stone and the only problem I find with the sports seats is that they're not deep enough to hold me in properly. My 3.6 M5 has slightly wider and deeper seats (again in leather) and they're almost perfect. The best standard seat I had was the amaretta suede & m-sport cloth in my 3.8 M5 - much warmer in winter, cooler in summer and no stickiness at any time - plus they gripped much better than leather.
I even tried one of the new Recaro CS seats (same as available from the new BMW Performance catalogue) but found them too shallow too. I eventually settled for a Recaro Pole Position (the ABE version which lets you use normal seatbelts) and was trying to get it trimmed in champagne alcantara, but Recaro & the retrimmer kept coming up with excuses as to why they couldn't get the colour I wanted, even though it was their sample I chose from - I waited 5 months and then told them to stuff it.
