Hi all, me and some mates are going to Edinburgh this weekend for a two night drinking sesh. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on where to go, and how to go on.

I've been to Edinburgh once before for a night out this year but it was a thursday night and I cant really remember much. I remember Princes Street and the Grassmarket being the places to go.

Late pubs would be best, but if not we'd consider clubs too. Which clubs would be best. Also whats the dress code like in Edinburgh? In Newcastle where I'm from its usually very relaxed, no problems with jeans and T-Shirts, and big groups are generally not a problem, but whats it like up there? Theres 8 of us so would we have to split into smaller groups to get in places, etc?

Thanks for any advice smile

The grassmarket and the cowgate would probably be the best places to go and dress code is fairly relaxed. Thursday night is a student night. If you are after somewhere a bit posher try rose street (the one behind Princes street) and George street ( the one behind rose street).

Plus Hamiltons in Stockbridge is a good night out. Watch out for the fit blonde barmaid. biggrin

Oi, she's mine.

Erm.

I mean, she's taken. Apparently.

OP - if you fancy some free t-shirts, do the Belhaven Pub Crawl. 10 pubs, free shirt at the end (the World's End at the bottom of the Royal Mile). You do have to go out to Leith for 2 of them, though, (Cameo & Waterline) so you might as well start with them.

I'm no expert on Embra drinking establishments but there are some great places in Leith if you're down that way. Probably my favourite is the Port O' Leith although it may not be to everyone's taste. wink

If you've ever read any of the Rebus novels, you might want to have a swallae in The Oxford Bar. It'll be a wee bit of a dissapointment but a must if any of the group is a fan of the books.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Come on Embra people! ... speak up! shout

OP - I hope you have a great time and you're made to feel very welcome.

Cheers,

Eric smile

Do a pub crawl along rose street, some great wee and strange pubs and plenty places to get a munch along the way.

Ok.

Here is my 2p's worth. You can't go wrong with "George Street" However, it's not the cheapest place to go drinking down, but you will not get any loopers down that way. Candy Bar in George Street is classy and lovely place. Yet, it will cost you. Are you wanting to go for someone to eat also?

Leith Walk, Broughton Street, and Stockbridge, and Morningside Road ain't bad either. Tollcross/Bruntsfield has some decent pubs too.

To be fair, I think the OP should narrow it down a bit, what kind of bar(s) is he looking for?

Thanks for the replies.

OK food: We might end up going somewhere, but chances are, that might just be for a kebab or burger! hehe

I doubt we'll be going to Leith.

As for what kind of bars, anything really. Suggestions of somewhere where we can have some banter during the day for example, we'll probably go somewhere on saturday through the day to watch some footy on TV. Somewhere after where there is some nice talent wink

If it's talent yer after try (in no certain order) Candy Bar, Tiger Lilly, Le Monde, The Opal Lounge which are all nice and close to each other on George St.

All Bar one (again on George St) tends to have a nice buzz in it on a Saturday afternoon, although no tellys for footy etc..

None of the above are particularly cheap, but most tend to be, for the most part, ned free.

Just read this topic so for future visits to Embra, don't forget the Hairy Triangle (Burke and Hare, Western Bar etc...) in the West Port, just off the Grassmarket. Crap beer but the scenery is usually good LOL

Im uptown every weekend. Watch the football at 3 sisters in the Grassmarket then make your way into town from there. Can either go along the Grassmarket or up to George Street. Ivory Lounge or Tigerlily.
