Right. I've no idea who they are - I'm fairly new to photography and keen to se some of the best photos so it got me wondering who are the greatest photographers in each of the fields; landscape and then journalism photographers.

Ideas please...

There are so many styles that I think it's like asking who's the greatest singer of all time.

I'm not sure whether it's better to copy someone else, or just pick up a camera and 'use the force'.

I have always quite like Alfred Eisenstaedt since getting a book on Life photographers. He is credited for taking one of the most famous WWII pics

I'm definitely going to buy a giant version of this on canvas:

Not.

At the risk of being branded a pleb by those here who did a degree in photography, WTF?

missing nothing, I think thats the point. My old tutor would have laughed me out of the lecture room for putting that stuff up to crit but the point they would be missing is just how much £££££ those guys make. It isnt always about art but context and I think thats what scho is on about

I'd toss them all in the bin too

Ah yes, like Damien Hurst being able to put a turd in a box and sell it for £1,000,000 just because he did it and not me.

yep, I have a list of all the women I have shagged, if I put their names over a tent I'd be done for crimes to art and some sexual discrimination/humiliation stuff too. I watched some old toff explain Emin as it all being from the soul and thats why its worth so much, that if any other mere mortal had done it then it just wouldnt work.

'Toffs' are usually far more sensible than that, preferring a nice Rembrandt or similar.

The same thing applies: you could paint a painting equal in quality to those of Rembrandt, but it wouldn't be worth the same. At that level, it's not about art, it's about memorabilia. That's fine by me, it's just silly when people pretend it is about art.

Absolutely, but the likes of Rembrandt could actually paint - they had immense skill, so people are at least buying a real work of art, and not a gimmick.

Anyway, back to the plot. On my walls I have a number of prints and paintings including a Louis Wain watercolour. There are four photographs, one a signed print by Norman Parkinson, the other three by Lord Simpo biggrin
