ACO cancels Le Mans test day

Stephane Sarrazin, Peugeot, at Le MansThe organisers of the Le Mans 24 Hours have cancelled the race's traditional Test Day, scheduled for May 31, as part of a package of cost-cutting measures for next season.
A statement read: "In keeping with the cost reductions already begun with the 2009 ACO regulations, and the new orientations in 2011, the test day has been cancelled.
"This decision represents considerable savings for all the entrants, who must be ready at the circuit on Monday 8th June (scrutineering)."
The ACO has also reduced the length of all 2009 Le Mans Series races from four days to three, including scrutineering.
The test day has not always been a part of the event's schedule and wasn't introduced until 1959. It was dropped during the petrol crisis in the 1970s before being re-introduced in 1986-'87.
It was then cancelled again until 1993 whereupon it was sometimes used as a pre-qualifaction system to reduce the oversubscribed entry.
The ACO has used the current Test Day system since 2005.
