Anyone on here with the saloon version of the E92 M3 please? I came rather close to ordering a 335i M Sport the other weekend, but held off as prices seem to be 'variable' at the moment. Glad I did as my local BMW dealer is now trying to tempt me with an M3 saloon (have 3 kids, so this would be a better option than the coupe for me).

I'd be interested in any comments from owners - what's it like to live with? I'll only do about 7k miles a year in it, mostly local driving but a couple of modest track days and probably one European trip each year.

Roll on!

Dont have one but they are nice. However, if I had that sort of money I would have to consider a nice used M5. Have you not considered one?

Had mine for 3 weeks now. Every day it amazes me more......

Ridiculously fast and relatively discreet. So much better looking than the standard saloon with the coupe front end. Utter bargains now as well. 9k miles and £36.8k at Sytner Coventry.

Just do it.

RE: the M5, from a bmw dealer you're looking at a year+ older with more miles, also higher running costs. Never bothered driving one but just have a mental image that its less chuckable than the M3. Also think you'd be far better off with the M3 if you're thinking of tracking it?

I do like the M5, but (a) don't need anything that big and (b) having coming come out of a Range Rover earlier this yr I'm keen to see a bit better than 13 mpg for a change! rolleyes

What's the M3 been like on the fuel? The dealer tells me 22 - 24 mpg round town is likely? You are dead right about prices - they do seem like a real bargain at the moment. I prefer the more understated look, plus 4 doors will be handy sometimes.

I was speaking to Jethro B (of Evo fame) at a mates wedding recently and he is running and M3 saloon. He was raving about it! Baring in mind the metal the lad has run in the past and his knowledge of car, I thought it was quite a good comendation!

22-24 around town is unlikey, i get 15-19 max, 21-24 on a run depending on how easy i take it

My coupe has averaged 22.9 for 27k miles. But my daily commute is 30 miles each way on Oxfordshire A roads where 60mph is tops.

Ditto on consumption and the range is short with a 63 litre tank.

Look at Jethro Bovingdon's reports on Drivers' Republic where he has moved from Evo:

http://www.drivers-republic.com/community/groups/l...

Every mag that has included these cars in group tests has chosen the M3 as the winner - elsewhere on DR you can watch a video of their test against AMG C63 and Lexus ISF.

You may be put off by Top Gear on Sunday. The Stig had the M3 saloon above a Gallardo on track times, but worryingly JC said: 'The M3 is so good that you would have to be a cock not to want one'.

Personally, I preferred the Coupe to the Saloon because of driving position and induction noise (see latest Blog on DR) but if you want to put kids in the back the Saloon just has to be the best sports car which fits the purpose.

I'm onto my 2nd E92 M3 now, so that speaks of how much I like the car. Not driven the E90, but Evo reckon its actually a better all round package than the coupe.
Interesting that the OP's dealer thinks 22-24mpg around town is the norm. He should tell that to the dealer that managed 11mpg on the 4 mile road test they did in mine after its running-in service yesterday (compared to 21.7mpg over 1,250 leisurely running in miles). Clearly an enthusiastic road test, especially as the DCT box had been moved to (and tellingly left in) its most aggressive setting.

Dick D, don't you think they may have been running the engine in the workshop to score that consumption level?

Did you bring it to the attention of the Service Manager?

I wonder if the more favourable comments in recent tests of the M3 when in saloon format is because of the benefit of development of the product since its introduction. I am sure that improvements are made through time without being particularly flagged up. It would be interesting to see how an 09 coupe compares with the saloon.

Or redlined it in every gear in the name of a 'road test'.

Im very impressed with them and nearly bought a brand new one as our family car the other day. When we took our 2 year old down to the BMW dealer to try putting her in and out of her child seat we found(amazingly)that it was easier to get her in and out of the coupe??!!
In the end we have ordered a convertible for March 1st delivery.

Could be. Read Jethro Bovingdon's 2nd December Long Term Report on his saloon on Drivers Republic at http://www.drivers-republic.com/community/groups/l...

My worry is that it wont hold its value like the coupe (if thats not bad enough), like the old E36.

My E90 is 3 months old with 2,700 mls. Overall 22mpg (with 24 best 13worst. )Oil consumption is about 1/2 litre in 1700 mls since first service. Advice has been that both fuel/oil consumption will improve. Overall I am very pleased and like the fact that the car is simply another 3 series beemer to most road users. I had a coupe previously and liked that as well, it really is a personal taste as to shape/ practicality. On balance the saloon seems more chunky and also I am a little wary of the coupe carbon roof after problems with peeling lacquer on a CSL a few years ago.
