This morning I had the misfortune of reading an update from this service and immediately felt a rant coming on...
I honestly don't understand why people would want to 'connect with' incompetent, lazy, power obsessed colleagues from yesteryear. But it doesn't stop there - now my old colleagues are starting to recommend their managers, writing up to five hundred words on how wonderful they are. Now aside from being brilliant fictional pieces, and serving as an introduction into the finer skills of brown nosing, I just fail to comprehend how people can sit at work writing rubbish about a manager they detest so much that they feel physically sick before entering the office. Is it any wonder the s
t float to the top? 
(Note that I'm only on Linked-In due to being told to use the site during tendering when I worked for a public/private sector contractor)

I find it quite useful to keep in touch with ex-colleagues and current ones as well as customers and suppliers.
I have asked the odd person I trust for a recommendation and they have willingly provided one. Equally, for those I trust who have asked me, I have written one for them. Works well and I am not trying to fill my Linked-In profile with thousands of random people (like Facebook etc). Nope, its all professional and works fine.
Oh, and I ignore recruitment companies....

+1, the amount of recruiters looking to grow their network is staggering.I've been on their a while now, it has proved useful in tendering for IT solutions now and again but other than that it seems to be simply a tool to get names and contacts.
