Parents who must know they've failed.
Discussion
A friend of a friend has a 24 year old graduate son, who lives in the converted garage, which has shower room and kitchenette.
He has a job.
Dad comes home from work, having been made redundant. He's mid 50's and is Mr Bean.
So the conversation is "How are we going to manage whilst I look for a new job"
To "We could ask our oldest child to pay rent"
Now here's the piss boiling bit.
He point blank refuses. Believes he has the right to come and go in his own self contained granny flat.
The piss boiling bit ? Parents haven't yet asked him to leave so they can get a paying guest in.

I paid rent from the age of 21 up until leaving home. Helped me learn the value of money, pay a little something towards food, bills etc and generally made me take a bit of responsibility.
Hated it at the time, but i think its contributed to a decent up bringing.
They need to be a bit more forceful.

If the son can pay then he should pay. I gratefully received a leg up or two from my folks a few years back and regard it as read that if they need any help, financial or otherwise, as they get older, then it is my place to help. Likewise I expect to help my kids or nephews/nieces. The selfish git in the granny flat should come home to find his gear in a cardboard box on the garden path....

I think the actual circumstances make it worse. I can remember my dad coming home having been made redundant, and as a 13 year old I told him that he could have all the money in my Post office account (£75 from my paper round) if that would help.
I had a job straight from leaving school, I paid my keep as soon as I started earning. One week after I lost the job I was told by my mother that I was to either get another job by Monday, get down the dole office and get some money or find somewhere else to live. No money = no roof.
I would do the same to my own children.
