A good year for games?

I disagree with this. If you look at the list of games in the 2008 GOTY thread, there are several titles which not only want to make me run down to the shops ASAP, but leave me completely cold and disinterested.
Yes we had a GTA, which was all very nice and flashy but doesn't have the long-term appeal of the older ones. Call of Duty suffered a similar fate, only worse.
MGS was a high point, although you haven't seen hundreds of threads raving about how brilliant the game is - not many people are still playing it.
For what people are playing now, you have to head back to 2007. COD4. Forza 2. Project Gotham 4. Super Mario Galaxy. All awesome games - COD4 is still winning awards, it took 4 Golden Joysticks in the 2008 awards, including ultimate game of the year.
I think next year will be much more successful, with the new COD being top of the bill, and also GT5 (or more likely, an improved/expanded version of Prologue) to look forward to, amongst other things.

I'd say it's been a cracking year, but obviously it depends on what games you're into, though I agree 2007 proved the better of the two.
Perhaps a better statement would be 'It's been a poor year for original games, but a good year for games in general' ?
GTA4 I love, can't get enough of it and keep going back to it.
Little Big Planet is incredibly refreshing and original.
Latest installment to the MotoGP series of games, as well as the SBK game are both great, though I appreciate the audience for these is somewhat smaller.
Pure seems a good laugh judging by the demo, though I'm guessing it's more of a short termer, shaun white snowboarding seems the same though from a quick blast at a mates it doesn't warrant the dire reviews it got in the gaming press.
MGS seems brilliant, though it's on the 'To Do' pile thanks to lack of time and my PS3 being away for repair earlier in the year.
I will admit COD4 and Forza 2 are the ones I keep going back to aside of GTA4, I've dabbled with COD5 and hated every minute of it, and now I've decided to stick with what I've got and make a concerned effort to progress through them.
Gears of War 2 is the only real let down for me this year, started as a cracking game, but totally devoid of originality, the plot is nowhere near as gripping as the first, the multiplayer is a catastrophic failure, with the only saving grace being horde mode. Really disappointed in that as I was looking forward to getting back into gaming with some folks from here.
Other titles probably worth a mention are fable 2, fallout 3, though I've yet to play either.

The games industry will always progress massively in terms of hardware - video gaming is only in its childhood and games are getting better all the time. Just think of where we might be in ten years?The prices of consoles and some of the older games have dropped like a stone.

However I still think that there have been comparatively few excellent games out this year, even if MGS4 is 'one of the best games ever made'. One game does not a good year make.
My PS3 has been gaining a layer of dust over the past few months, and at least some of that is down to the fact that nothing within the last 3 months has made me want to go out and buy it.
I'm hoping next year has a wider variety of brilliant games - the technological advancements should see to that.
