You can infer racial/sexual discrimination as to why the interview as cancelled to get anywhere

Well it happens all the time in the NHS, advertised positions being filled internally without people being interviewed so I would guess it's fine to do.

Possibly a polite way of saying there wasnt a vacancy in the first place and they were maybe just trawling to see who was available, and maybe now they can't afford to fill the vacancy anyway.

We often have jobs where I work that are advertised internally first, and only then if they can't fill them do they advertise externally.
I have to admit I thought this was common practice.

Common practice is to dangle the carrot over 3 or 4 internal possibilities, advertise internally, then exturnally, and then appoint your old house mate from University, without an application.

Same thing used to happen at the university I used to work at. One of the Plumber/Fitters had been ear-marked for a promotion to an Assistant Engineer's post for a long time; when they had a vacancy, they told him to apply and it would be his, however, policy stated they had to advertise externally as well. They let five men waste a day's holiday to come for an interview for a job they had no chance of getting.

Only if you have a cr***y company - normally you employ the best one you can find. Not the first one who seems to be able to do it
