ultima in germany, which engine can be registered ?

Dear Ultima owners,

I know there are only a few in germany, and the ones I know or I have spoken too say that you need the modern
Ls engines to get the car registered in germany. I am no specialist in registration and digging up info on this
is extremely difficult. If anybody has more information on this that would be very helpful.
There is a canam on sale in the classifieds that has a carburated engine and instead of building one and spend all the hours
simply buying one would be a tempting option.

I assume you will need an injected engine to meet the EUROx norms. You could try and talk to these people: http://www.ultimacars.de/news/index.html

I talked to Sven already he says the only way to go is LS3 or LS7 engine, but who knows
maybe somebody has a good friend........

Hello Spatz,

I know the answer is a bit late (and so you've probably already decided what to do), but I'm building my Ultima here (Germany) and I'm going to register it in England first because it's cheaper and less complicated than the TÜV (according to some Germans I know who have registered kit cars here), and then I will re-register it here in Germany (a European formality and very cheap).

There is a company in Kent (UK) who will take my car to register it, while I go and visit friends, and then I'll bring it back here.

Hello again Spatz,

What I was also going to say was that in the UK it's a bit easier to use an older engine. I'm using a rebuilt 1999 LS1 and should get through the UK IVA test, and due to european law I have to be allowed to register it in Germany (at least that's what I've been told).

I've been told (but I disagree), that if a car has been registered in UK, even for an hour, european laws force
the other EU countries to accept and register it...

It doesn't work for me in France and either Ted Marlow for Ultima or Rousseaux for Radical in France ignore
this solution...

My solution : the car belongs to someone in England but he let the car in France for his holydays
and I use it because it's not good for a car not to run for a long time... ;-)
The first year finding an insurance was difficult and expensive but now everything's OK for 700 euros/year.

I'm not yet ready to register my car, but I was told that European law says that you can re-register any European car to another European country. I have a friend in Frankfurt who is doing it with a kit car from the UK (hopefully in the next two weeks). I'll let you know the details and if it works.

I've also heard (as Budala said) that France doesn't play along with these rules.

What about the Euro V that has started this month? Is the Ls7 still fine for the emissions test?

Good question. Looked around to see if I could find info on the LS7 and if it was also Euro5 compatible but couldn't find anything. I imagine it does, but would like to be sure.

There`s no way to pass the Euro 5 emissions test with an LS7, it`s hardly possible to "officially" pass Euro4 with all the modifications. Euro 5 will be mandatory from Jan 1st 2011 for newly registered vehicles. The LS9 is also only good for Euro 4, so there`ll surely be a new GM engine line soon - given that GM will still be on the market in 2011....
