I must be getting old - but the way the media hypes up snowfalls makes me laugh. 15cms. When I was a kid snowfall was often measured in feet! I must me getting old!

I think we ought to modernize at some point, otherwise we would still be riding horses and bathing once a week, as it's the "english" way.

I'm sorry, snow is still measured in the imperial system for some strange reason. Only feet and inches here please smile

200 schools closed it Leicestershire, or was it Lancashire?, but anyway, 200 schools??? Did they have 1 foot of snow, or just the usual 1" that had the teachers whooping with delight at another excuse for a paid day off???

rolleyes

Last year we had schools closed around my way just because there was a forecast of feckin' snow the day before!!!

Having said that though we are returning to the UK for 2 weeks at Christmas and staying in deepest Dorset. I expect it to be bloody freezing!

They did actually, but only after we'd struggled in, found half the school hadn't turned up and then been told we could go home, i.e. walk home in the snow.

LOL, All we saw were two ears flapping up and down above the snow as they were jumping - wish I'd have taken a pic now!

I remember when we walked miles to school through fallng snow and huddled round a coal stove for warmth. It was in Lincolnshire in the 1950s and the snow was so deep we tunnelled through it to get to the next cottage down the lane. I must have been about seven at the time.

Seems like we've bred a generation of wimps who hibernate at the first sign of a snow cloud. Wusses the lot of them though media panic is partly to blame; they were 'snow-mad' on the local TV news, gleefully listing all the roads that were closed without mentioning that many (perhaps most) major routes were open.

I had to laugh at the three TV reporters this morning who'd been sent out to cover the blizzards. Two of them and said "As you can see, there's no snow and the motorway traffic is flowing freely..."

Wouldn't be the sausage dog and alsation out for a walk in the snow, and the alsation turns, and says to the sausage dog "My feet are cold".

The sausage dog looked up and said, "Your feet are cold?" laugh

All this fondness for the olden days, when men were men and so were the women is nostalgic nonesense to say the least.

When it were all fields there wasn't thritybillion cars setting off for work at roughly the same time. It's this fact only that causes the problems, not that the youth of today are all soft as $hit. Well maybe we're a bit less tolerant of ice on the inside of the house, and gout, and nazi invasion, but that's not unreasonable is it? smile

I set off this am at 7.20. Tried to get from one side of leeds to the other basically, had to turn round and come home after 2 miles as the traffic was just solid. Tried again an hour or so later and just about managed to get in.

Is needless though, if they thought to get gritters going at twice the capacity and actually bother to not just do the main roads it would have been a lot easier....tsk.

I always fancied being a gritter, only working a couple of days a year......
