As I'm soon to have three children under the age of 20 months, I'm looking for a large estate car. My budget buys a 2002'ish V70 2.4 and a slightly older or higher mileage 2.4T or possibly an older 2.3T. As I'm in Oz, it'll prob come with an auto box, which I'll just have to get on with.

I'm after advice as to what to look for and whether there are any particular 'must-haves'. Is it worth stretching for something newer - what are the turning points? Before anyone suggests it, an XC90 is prob too much car and too much cash for me.

Thanks in advance

First generation V70, short axle distance gives it a bit of a jumpy/flimsy character over bumpy surfaces, looks a little dated inside but very nice on the outside (in the right colour), electronic throttle problems on some models.

Second generation V70, feels more modern and better comfort than the first gen, no known throttle problems, looks nice inside but outside looks weird with the concave door panels.

I would go for a high spec first generation, but if you like the look of the later model go for that, it is a better car in many ways.

Great solid cars.

T5 (2.3T) is the pick of the bunch. But not as comfortable as the others over bumpy roads.

Leather is a must and everything else is pretty much standard or a real luxury. The cars come very well spec'd.

Service history is important but buy on conditon as well !!

Even with 100k on the colck the cars should look and feel like new if they ahve been looked after.

Not sure but the V70 might suffer from the same poor turning circle as the S60 which isn't bad, just needs five point turns instead of the usual three.

D5 is usually the pick of the engines, plenty of pull and still reasonable fuel consumption, as already mentioned the T5 is the fun one and both have a lovely sound. All ride well even with the seventeen inch wheels on.

SE should be an aim, that includes all leather, climate, fogs, ABS, 17" alloys, in dash four cd player, information centre, alarm, all electric windows and many, many air bags.

Winter pack adds heated front seats and headlight wash.

Some have electric seats/sunroof/xenon's but they were options.

Best bits are the seats, stereo and engine.

Having done many miles in all derivatives, of the petrols the 2.4T (or later 2.5T) with Geartronic is the pick of the bunch.
The T5 has quite a stiff ride with no noticable imrpovement in handling and is impossible to pull away swiftly in the wet (=wheelspin/flashing traction control) light.
The non turbos are fine if you don't mind a lack of overtaking power, but struggle when loaded.
The low pressure turbo 2.4T and 2.5T have a much better power delivery for the V70. If it was an S60 I'd always go for the T5 though.

The sports seats are nice to have, as is the multi CD/high performance stereo that comes on a 2002 onwards UK spec SE.

E.T.A the auto gearboxes in V70s are very good. 2003 model year onwards got better steering (but heavier) and a few other tweaks. 2005 model year cars are facelifted but drive no differently.

Thanks for the responses - I'm aiming to get as late a car as I can, but a selection of what I'm looking at can be found here

I'm also looking at getting a little cheap something for fun, so the V70 doesn't have to be a ball of fire, just practical, comfortable and reliable. Having said all that, if it goes like the clappers, then that's good too biggrin

Cheers

Congrats!

Will you be able to get 3 child seats across the back?

If you are thinking about baby in the front, missus + 2 seats in back, its not a long term solution. My old man lives in Spain and has a old 960 estate. When he picks us (me, missus, 2 lads under 4) up from the airport its a uncomfy squeeze for the missus (tall, size 12) to sit in the middle of 2 child seats for an hour+. Wouldnt want to do it all the time

You also need to double check on the power output of the engine...I think quite a few 2.4's over here were 140bhp, even though there was a 170bhp model too.
Someone mentioned about the turning cirle, well apparently, even though it was the best (right till the end) they did improve it over the years, so check to see if you can live with it.

Other than that, its a lovely solid car and if you get a pokey enough engine, certainly quick enough and has reasonable ride and handling.
