Need to replace my knackered Spesh flats. Which would you recommend, that ideally needs as little maintenence as possible.

It is for cross country stuff. Bike is an epic. SPDs not an option (unfortunately)

DMR, Wellgo, Shimano, Crank Bros, Others?

Cheers

Easton Flat boys, Shimano DX's, or Azonic X-Pedals/A frames all last the distance.

Oh, and purely out of curiosity, why no SPD's? Especially considering the type of bike?

Kona Wah Wah pedals won a recent grouptest in MBUK.

Can't comment myself, as I use Crank Bros clipless, and SPDs before that.

Same here. Ive had DMR V8s for a while now and cant fault them. Very grippy with any type of footwear. Only £25 as well

I'm a pedal killer, set of V8's last about 3 months and they're dead.

Shimano DX are the toughest pedals I've ever used. Use them DH and AM. I've smashed, bashed and crashed them dozens of times, spin them up with the jet wash till them hum everytime I clean my bike and basically treated them like st for 12 months now. A few of the pins could do with replacing and there's some good dents in them, but they ride like new. £50 a set rrp but they're the challenger tank of pedals.

Stupidly they come fitted with pointlessly short pins as standard and a bag of loose long ones. They're crap with the short ones in, but really good with the long ones. I keep some loose ones on the rear outside edge of mine so I can twist out if needs be with my 5.10's on, otherwise you've got to physically lift my foot stright up to get off them.

Choices choices... thanks for those.

As to why I can't use SPDs... right angle was broken badly about 20 years ago.. the toe end of the foot sits at around 40degrees out (assuming straight would be 0 degrees) when on the pedal. I have also to have a pedal extender - which sits between the pedal arm and pedal, and takes the pedal out a further inch. It is an absolute bugger when cycling down through ruts, as the right hand pedal sticks out like a friggin sticky out thing.

Tried SPDs but within half an hour ankle and knee very painful...

Cheers..

Chaps,

One other thing, can I ask a favour.

P-Jay, can you measure the width of the front edge, and the width of the middle of the pedal pls, so I can make sure it is as least as wide as the current pedal I have...

And if anyone can do this for the V8/V12 (I assume they are both the same width) I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

V8/V12 use the same casting - V12 gets sealed bearings. There actually quite small, but for some reason work really well, nice and concave.

Kona Wah Wah's definatley. The platform is a lot bigger so probably better for your funky foot. and they are a lot grippier and thinner than V12's (I am an SPD rider myself but thinking of trying flats for DH again. If I do it will be these that I get)

The wah wahs have caught my eye on this thread however and I may give them a try once the wellgo's have died.

DMR pedals are pretty gash, no matter what model.

I'd go with Shimano DX's or Easton Flatboys. I've been running the same set of flatboys for nearly 3 years now on my DH bike. They have been abused something rotten over that time & they are still going strong.

The platform on the Shimano or Easton's is way bigger than the DMR's too, which is handly if you have bigger feet.

I find the DMRs and their copies very small. Prefer Shimano DX or Azonic A-Frames. Really need to try some eastons as they're droolworthy

Decided on the Shimano's in the end. Need a big platform 'cos my foots all over the place..and they seemed to tick all the boxes (and at £35.00 seemed a bit of a bargain...)

That's a keen price! I've paid £50 for mine. You won’t be disappointed, just remember to change the pins over.
