Hello,

i already own a griffith but now thinking of buying a cerbera too. What happened to the prices??

i want to buy one with a restored chassis and put it in the garage and sometimes drive it. How about parts supply?
Age does not matter as long as chassis is 100 %. Must be in very good condition.

please send me some links or pictures with prices and so on if someone thinks of selling such a car.

I do not have any interest in a speed six. Only AJP.

Thanks,
Fred

Not really seen many with restored chassis. They tend to also fit yank engines. There are plenty of patched up chassis out there but not total restore.

I have seen some that the chassis is in perfectly acceptable condition. I guess its whether its been driven through salty road winters. Are you wintrading as in the motorbike parts distributor?

No i used to own a marketmaking firm in amsterdam called wintrading because my name is Fred WINia so WINtrading. Also for winning. Nothing to do with motorcycles. Just thinking of buying one with very very good chassis because that is the hardest job. Just thinking of buying one and keep it for ever and i do not want to do a body off restoration. Seems to me as a sound investment too. Because how low can you go.

I have a few cars and my mechanic is going to England soon for some parts of classic cars and he is willing to have a look at other cars.

Not sure yet. Strange enough i always dreamt of owning such a car.

Because i found out that the build quality of TVR's is very bad i do not want to rebuild the car all over again. Because just not worth it.

Thanks anyway when someone runs into a very very nice example let me know please perhaps will buy. Age does not matter.

But no speed six please because i read some stuff and TVR got away with poor build quality of the car but with an engine this just does not work. They seemed to be lucky with the AJP.

Interesting last post - you want a cerbera yet seem to be sgging them off?

Would you care to explain the poor build quality comment? I have plenty of surprised people when I tell them my car is 11 years old not new.

Got lucky with the AJP? S6 engine doesn't work?

LOL - This is where I have a problem as I don't think they are and certainly not as bad as everyone makes out.

Ok i will explain my post. My brother in law is ferrari workshop owner and he restores classic ferrari's (www.roelofsparts.com). I fell in love years ago when i first saw a griff. The sound and the smooth shape really attracted me. So after saving money i bought one. At that time i also worked sometimes in my brother in laws workshop fixing classic cars and helping to restore them. At that time he does not restore carsanymore now mostly racing preparations (250GTO,SWB,daytona lm and so on).

So i bought the griff just because i loved the car. Drove the car i thought i handled bad but i did not care because i thought i could all fix this.So after i bought the car my brother and me closely inspected the car and found out that build quality is very poor. To name a few things:
- powdercoating of chassis is very very poor and chips off.
-ecu just placed on battery with rubber mat.
-all cables and braking lines attached with tie raps????
-no heat shields what so ever to protect shocks.Manifolds heat the shocks and that worsens handling.
-rollbar rubbers too soft (ford) cant handle the forces.
-lots of things just fall off. Mirrors and so on.Cabin lights, dashboardbox thingy.
-fuel lines kinda weird and cheapish placement.(wrong english i guess)
-silent blocks of shocks can deal with the forces due to the steep (racy angle) angle. You need rose joints to attach the shocks otherwise you have to replace the silent blocks every few months.Rose joints give much better handling too. So all that talk about what shocks to buy has no use if you do not use rose joints. I use intrax shocks with rose joints.
-other lots of kinda cheapish things. too much to mention.
-electricity wiring is a mess.
-look how heating system blows air into cabin. No hoses what so ever. Do not know how to say in english.
-What is that milky spot on the window screen?

But also old ferrari were sometimes made like this. Or handled very bad. Like the 275 GTB.

If you throw enough money to a TVR you can make it handle relatively well. And because it is much cheaper then other super cars i can live with all this.

I love TVR's but if you look good you can see that TVR used cheap materials to keep the car cheap.

The handling of TVR's i drove is mostly bad not because the chassis or something is bad but just because they used cheap materials which wear down kinda fast which deteriates the handling. My brother told me chassis is kinda racy and basicly ok.

So because powdercoating of TVR is very bad i do not want a car with a 10 year old chassis or even less years. The main problem was the chassis. After that all things can be fixed with some sense.

You can't compare a TVR with a ferrari or porsche because i think they are in a completely other price region. And quality of modern ferrari's and porsches are much better. But still i prefer a TVR over a porsche because to me it has more soul.

If you look closely TVR buildquality is not that good.

And about the engines. You CAN get away with bad build quality for a car but with angines it is an other thing. My brother said good that they do not make their own engine because then the car would have lots of problems. I still think that they were kinda lucky with the AJP it seems kinda ok. But speed six ?? No thanks.

Still want a cerbera though.

Everyone has their own opinion I guess, but I think you are in a minority. Did you own your cerb from new? Have you seen that they have probs with clutches, slaves, starters, alarms, electrics, engines, achieving BHP, suspension failing, CAMS wearing, cranks busting, handbrakes not working, chassis rust, big fuses, windscreen cracks due to jacking, fires, overheating etc etc

Alot of the TVR's out there are accident waiting to happen - nice shney top and rotten as fk underneath! I just laugh at people that let there car get like this.

Some people have NO IDEA what it take to run these things. Less with a YANK Lump though (Faster too wink).

Bu your definition Fred, yes, they are badly built. But take a look at a good, sorted one, and I think you would be pleasantly surprised.
A lot of the problems are because owners do not look after their cars, the way they should be looked after. Once you have a 'sorted' Cerb, they need to be looked after properly, and serviced reglarly by someone who knows Cerbera's, and not by someone who is just a good mechanic - theres a Big diference.

I know but i think a lot of problems occur because TVR did not put their cars together very properly. But that is why i am thinking of buying one with a very good chassis. Because the shiny body does not say a lot. And i think i have to do all the repairs myself with my brother because in the Netherlands we got one TVR "specialist"but i am not very convinced they do i good job. Brought it there once and never again. In England i guess you got a lot of experts but here i have to do it myself.

By the way my griffith only left me standing when the big fuse broke down for the rest all minor problems. About the cheapest car i ever owned. After rebuilding it a bit i mean.

I guess the same thing with a cerbera.

By the way i have seen a lot of work done not only by our TVR specialist but also by ferrari guys and so on. And sometimes it is really really bad. So a good mechanic is always necessary. Anyway thanks for the replies will check the cars for sale on this page. Not in a hurry.

All can be fixed but i hate rusty chassis.

Why oh why did TVR not use proper powdercoating. Powdercoating is very cheap and absolutely no need to do it like they did.

Guess I got a good one then biggrin Only problem I've had is a big fuse (and I'll admit about being lazy about not changing the wiper parking switch).

Of course I have to put this all into perspective. I had Capris before my TVR with the last being a 2.8i with a 3.1 long stroke race engine, fully sorted, mostly because the thing broke everything on it. Two gearboxes, one rear axle, one wishbone, I wore the cam lobe completely off cyl 1 with oil starvation on a trackday at Silverstone, broke the suspension on another track day at castle coombe. Then we could add the 20 year old electrics with corroded wires, dodgy connections and a number of previous owner bodges and we haven't even started on the rust. By the time I finished restoring it from the ground up it was perfect, but there wasn't much left that was original.

And as previously mentioned I had to have a whole new engine in our 5 month old Primera...

So my TVR's been perfect compared to those two. Plus I get a little fed up with everyone knocking TVR "Oohh there so unreliable, I'm surprised you got here" comments.

Sounds like you need to look for a late model Fred, but I wouldn't be put off the earlier ones if you find one you like. Sounds like you've got the experience and resources to fettle one nicely.

yep shocking - does show to some extent they are not the greatest in ithis respect (some of the worst) - most punters with polished top side don't realise the time bomb they are sitting on.

Not all can be fixed! Alot ars Soooooooooo bad it is unreal the Glass fibre is holding the steel together. I don't pity anyone that buys or lets their car get like this though!

I have always been of the belief that to take any TVR on,then it pays to have some mechanical knowledge.I have seen quiet a few over recent years that have had very poor chassis.A lot due to the fact that the owners pay no attention to them.Personally on my Cerb, once a year its up on the four poster and gets inspected by me and,and then treated to various coats of wayoil, with any loose areas scraped off.Funnily enough the older cars seem to fair better with the silver powder coating than the later ones with the white.
