I’m fking furious, if I could I’d drive to Halifax, drag the out of his office and beat him to a pulp and leave him a gibbering slobbering wreck, this is the bank we just bailed out without even getting consulted.

Three months ago a friend of mine was diagnosed with advanced cancer, she has had fairly extensive surgery and is now undergoing chemo and will then have a course of radiotherapy, and then we’ll see.

As you can imagine she is in quite a state, She works hard and isn’t stupid, her full pay will stop shortly and then she will be on SSP, so she wrote to her credit card company telling them the situation and asking for there help.

She got a standard letter back ignoring her situation and telling her that, if she is in financial difficulty She should go to citizens advice, in total disbelief she called the Halifax today and got hold of the bloke who sent the letter, basically he said that’s their policy and that’s that, he wouldn’t offer any help of put her through to somebody who would, wker! Ok I know it’s not their fault she’s ill but it’s not her's either.

Does anyone know if there is anything she can do? My suggestion was to cancel the DD and let them take her to court; understandably she doesn’t want to do that.

Tell her to go straight to the cab and they will sort it out, its not widely known about the powers they have. HTH.

Actually you've put your finger on a lot of problems: 'POLICY'. It saves thought, it saves common sense, it saves judgement, it avoids humanity. Just write some policy and tell all your staff to follow it. Companies run to POLICY like a baby to its mother.

Have you got any idea how many people would take the piss if it was as easy as that? The Halifax guy suggested exactly the right course of action - go to CAB, then take it from there. I hope she gets sorted.

I'm as annoyed as you at the inhumanity of it, but it's of our own making, sadly.

But she's done the sensible thing, she's contacted them before any problems occur, why does an oganisation that has nothing to do with either of them or has any enforcement powers need to be involved? The way I see it thay are just dragging it out for as long as possible so they can rack up the interest before they have to stop it.

If this happened 3 months ago and she's still on full pay then surely she will have paid the card off by now?

No, but wasnt in arrears, some people seem to live with high balances.

I agree with oversteer; if they didn't make it difficult too many people would abuse the system.

It may not be her fault that she is ill, but it certainly is her fault that she has a credit card and did not make allowances for future events. While the banks actions are are probably detrimental for both of them in the long term it is hard to find any fault with them.

She wrote to them asking just that, what can they do to help, remember she is employed.

I wouldn't dream of using the facilities on my credit card but I get the impression most people do, It seems to me her only way to get the interest frozen is to get taken to court

This may go down badly but.... I pay quite a lot in order to be able to meet my bills in case the 'above' happens to me?

Trust me I feel for 'her'. What would you like to happen? Write the obvious debt off? Give her a payment holiday of 2/3/12 months?

Tell us your solution and let's take it from there?

Give her my and our best! (Have had minor Ca and the SWMBO has had heart surgery)

Silly qustion, but I take she doesn't have any payment protection plan?

Comes as standard on some accounts/cards, I believe.
