e46 328 sluggish and erratic idle

hi all,

noticed my cars tickover was very erratic to the point where it stalls sometimes it will sit there on its own and rev upto 1200 down to nothing and back up somtimes stalling, its been doning this for sometime now but the symptons will go away for 3 or 4 months, when driving the car it feels very sluggish and not very free reving + i could not pull away from 318 coupe that was tailgating me on motorway.
my car is e46 328 saloon feels like its got about 100 bhp , how or what should i check to sort this , anyone know of any good garages that could sort this in kent area?

Perhaps worth getting a diagnostics run on it.
May be a cam sensor if it's idling funny and feels sluggish

Nope, a lot of independents will read your fault codes for £20-£30.....perhaps less for cash
