We had better spend, spend, spend or we are all going to have a hard time in 2009.
If only people would stop taking too much notice of the media, having suicidal thoughts and spend their money so we can all earn a living.
If we dont earn we cant race and that is NOT FUNNY.
And as this is a Motorsport Forum its an important point.
We could even get our wives out racing then at least they will spend, spend, spend.
So you lot keep the UKs Motorsport Idustry workers employed and Spend it all racing in 2009,enjoy yourself and Sod the whingers and Doom mongers.

Precisely. What the economy needs right now is nothing more complicated than for people to say, "oh sod it, let's have a damn good Christmas!"

Getting cashflow moving again is what it needs.

I'm sorry but you've got your head stuck very deeply in the sand.

1,000's of jobs are being lost every week, companies close (even well known ones) shopping bills are getting higher each month, utility bills are growing at an alarming rate, public transport, namely the trains, keep increasing prices, the world financial system is in melt down, Ford, GM and Chrysler are only months away from total collaspe...

...and you tell us to spend more money.

I tell you, what money?

I have not had a pay increase for years, so in real terms my annual salary is decreasing while every bill that hits my doormat is increasing, so don't tell me I should be spending more!

Typical coming from a Lord, (if you are one of course!!!!) furious

Spend money - yes.

The problem is that, for far too long, people have borrowed so they can have this, that and the other and hoped to be able to pay it back.

The banks have been lax in allowing too much credit and, as a result, the money flow has now all-but dried up.

The only way to get back to some degree of stability is - indeed - for money to start flowing again, but sensibly.

History teaches us that things happen; some good, some bad. We learn, we recover and we continue.

I will say it again

WHAT MONEY?

I do not have any loans, I do not have credit cards, I only spend what I have and that is very little at the moment due to what I said above.

As you rightly say, the past 10 years have been a false hope with people spending on credit, that's why we are in the st we are today.

If I had the money, trust me I would spend it, but I don't.

Try not to get too personal as we are all in the same Boat and must work together.
But we cant just roll over,we have to row to the shore, set up shop and earn, earn, earn.
Otherwise there will be no more Motorsport and Sod all to put into this Great Forum.

The 'spend spend spend' money the OP wants doesn't exist. The good times of the past few years were built on debt, not profit.

What we need is a re-adjustment back to realistic, sustainable levels. Sadly that means anything built on the false profit (excuse the pun) is at risk of being the house on the sand.

Keep it up!

Problem for many people now, who have run up huge credit debts (cards, loans, mortgages, etc.) that were cheap a few years ago (remember discounted mortgages?), is that their income is taken up in the 'pay later' bit of 'buy now, pay later'!

But as I said before, to keep going companies need cashflow. Even if - for now - the bottom line isn't massive profits; not a bad thing in a way, as it keeps the major shareholders - ie. banks - honest(ish!), keeping a head above water is the only way to ensure they're still about when (WHEN, not 'if') the upturn comes.

I agree,Quicksand.

But remember the many millions of people still working and its them who has to spend and that goes for those non profit making High Earning State sector employees.

I think I need to reiterate what the third poster in this thread said. Head buried firmly in sand.

Your company employed 31 people and now employs 16. Yet in the face of this fact reinforcing the media stories of redundancies everywhere you look, corporations downsizing, well known names going to the wall, you want us to forget that our jobs and futures are at risk and spend money so that you can still go motor racing?

That's NOT FUNNY.

Excellent demonstration of how far removed from reality you are, I'm sorry to say.

so please explain to me why i have had three credit card applications sent to me this week then... i didnt ask for them but the bank seem happy to encourage me to spend more on credit at the moment...oh is it nearly christmas?... they got themselves into it so they can get themselves out of it...

as for the OP, I have had to change my lifestyle to accomodate the current economical climate, perhaps you could too? in one sentance you say that everyone should spend more money, another poster says its the banks fault for loaning too much money, hten you edit the post to imply that rahter than doing the sensible thing like maybe take a year off motor racing, you are just going to ask the bank manager for more money? here have the golden donut award for stupidity....

anyway, the prices at club motorsport events will no doubt go up in 2009 so i suspect you may have less people watching, sorry but at the moment, the thought of going to watch someone else enjoy themselves on a race track isnt that appealing...

I'm sorry but your comments clearly prove you've lost touch with reality. There is no money money money to spend spend spend.

The world has lived of credit for too long and we are all paying the price right now.

The many millions who are still working fear for their jobs, that's the reality. Either wake up and realise how stupid you look, or shut up and stop insulting us with your out-of-touch comments. furious

Admirable indeed. I share your sentiments having had to let 3 go last month myself. I'm now not the highest paid member of staff in my own company, having taken a 25% cut in salary in order to not make it 4.

The reality is that I want to go Motor Racing and so do many thousands of others in this Motorsport Forum.
I totally agree its going to be very hard in the next year or so,but its going to get a lot harder if people dont spend within their communities whether its the Motorsport World or their local shops.
So once again I say spend,if you can afford to,or are you suggesting everyone gives up Motorsport.

Thankyou Plug,the same here.
I had to take quite a loss and keep the margins small, but now I do find there are orders on the books from Asian companies requiring the best the UK can offer at competitive prices.
So lets just all hope certain people spend and help our cash flow and enable us to race in 2009.

The reality is I want to have a secure job, I want to be able to put food on the table for my family, I want to be able to heat the house in the winter...

The reality is, you do not live in the real world.

Going motorracing is not one of life's essentials, the other points I make ARE.

This thread just shows how the social gap is increasing, and more so under a labour government of all things - now who would have predicted that one!!?

I don't need anyone else to exhort me to spend what I can afford to spend.

However at the moment, even with a contract for next year in my pocket, I have no confidence that I will have a job for the whole year. In my industry, if I lose my job I have little chance of getting another in this country.

Many (in fact I'd speculate most) people are in a similar position. Even with years of service behind them, they are scared for their jobs and their futures. That's not a reaction to media scaremongering, it's a reaction to their own employers laying people off, slashing budgets, abandoning investment in new products.

Do you honestly think your remaining employees aren't tightening their belts and hoping that they are not the next one you have to sack so you can definitely still go racing next season? I bet any time you ask one of them into your office for a word, they brick themselves.

So can you please try to understand that for the moment, those who do not have a significant income allowing them to save a lot of money, or a large nest egg, or a trust fund to back them up, will not be spending more than they absolutely have to?

I could be spending a lot more money now than I am doing. How silly would I feel in March when the axe fell, leaving me with no job and insufficient savings to keep me going til I get another? Still at least I somehow inexplicably kept the motorsport industry going rolleyes that'd make my personal poverty seem worthwhile...
