"We charge more for a cash sale sir"
Discussion
I just had a sales guy quote me a £10 surcharge for wishing to pay for my new mobile using cash.
Apparently the lower advertised price in store is only available if I pay using a card. (Despite the fact card companies charge them 5% I seem to recall). I told him to forget it and walked away.
Is this practice even legal?

If the price is publicised at the lower rate and there is no mention of this higher price for cash (and whoever heard of that anway, FFS?!), it's an offence - giving a misleading price indication, or something like that, from memory.
Drop your local trading standards a line if you want to make life awkward for the shop in question...

k himself and THEN walked away. That is insane - unless maybe they have had a spate of forged notes and have had to invest in antifraud note scanners/checkers and are trying to recoup that... but frankly Im clutching at straws as to why cash is no longer king.
Clearly there is a cost to the shop for banking the cash (no idea what % of the amount that equates to though) also there is a charge for banking chq's - but most shops no longer accept this & there is a 2% fee for credit cards Amex is 3% IIRC.

It's because card payments are so much easier. There is no need to bank the cash, no need to cash up the till at the end of the day, no danger that some light fingered employee will slip a tenner into their pocket. It's all done electronically, full audit trail, easy. Now most people pay that way it's a pain to have a few want to give you cash.Clearly there is a cost to the shop for banking the cash (no idea what % of the amount that equates to though) also there is a charge for banking chq's - but most shops no longer accept this & there is a 2% fee for credit cards Amex is 3% IIRC.

Was it a pay as you go mobile? Same thing happened to me. I thought it must be so they have a registered card/ name/ address on the mobile. i.e. a drug dealer would pay cash and never register the sim card to hide his identity
And £10 extra would stop a dealer....?Edited by FiveStar on Friday 5th December 09:53

i'm affraid its to do with the terroist act.
all mobile phone companys are doing this. if you pay with debit or credit card, they then can get access to your name & address.
they give option for cash, normally £20 more. to try and make people pay with card.
