Taking cost and the fact that its totally impractical becuase of how often it would have to be rebuilt, it would be fantastic. And the late DFV's are pushing out around 570bhp, and I would imagine a 3.5litre V8 is considerably lighter than a 5.7 or 6 litre V8. So it would be up there with the fastest
3.0litre DFVs were around 160kgs I believe. Depending how old the version and level of tune it is possible to get one pretty reliable for road use. They are incredibly strong motors.
Of course a decent Rover V8 is similar in weight and it's fairly easy to get 400bhp out of them these days!

Dad's got a Nicholson McLaren 3 litre short-stroke Cosworth DFV in the Shadow. You start it up with a cattle prod (although an onboard start must be feasible). I think it's under 500bhp but is the one tuned for endurance rather than balls-out power. I think it's a bit more torquey and is limited to 10,500rpm rather than the 12,500 of the sprint ones (or something like that). This one is probably good for 1000km in between rebuilds. Not sure it's that practical for a road car...!

It's the cheapest of the ex F1 motors to run, next you're looking at probably an Judd V8 or an perhaps an Ilmor.
