Your weapon of choice: post-apocolyptic protection

In preparation for Brown's dystopia and the inevitable social breakdown resulting from the implosion of capitalism; Assuming your home may be overrun with locals bent on murder, rape and looting, what weapon would you choose to defend and repel?

A few parameters:

- You can only have one weapon
- It must be usable to defend inside the home
- Must be operable by you or your better half
- You must be able to procure it easily today

Just, er... curious, thats all...

Dunno. So many choices in my weapons cupboard.

Clearly, if you're defending attacks within the home, you'd need something that is usable in tight spaces eg corridors and smaller rooms as well as open areas like the back garden or living room. So, you don't want something that relies on a powerful swing to inflict damage like a club. A short sword, then. And possibly a survival knife if I'm allowed to use my other hand.

And a bow and arrow to pick them off as they run away.

Surgical steel cavalry sword. Nice and sharp, no messing about reloading, never breaks, makes an utter mess of your opponent. Can cut and pierce too.

Projectile weapons are really only useful outside the house, in the house, in the dark I would prefer cold steel to any other weapon.

Short and wieldy - so can be used inside
Issues of reliability solved (mostly) by HK and anyway, it's not going to have a hard life in your house.

Shotgun. Preferably a pump-action one, but I wouldn't have a clue where to get one, so a normal 12 bore would have to do. Whilst I'd like a sword/knife, I wouldn't know how to use it with any skill and would probably just get stabbed with it.
