What would you choose as a track day car with an inital purchase cost of £2k, my initial thoughts are looking at an MR2 turbo?

So what, don't bother to reply if it bothers you that much, christ!

An MR2 would be a good base for a cheap trackday car, they handle well, are reliable and are plentiful

205 GTI? You could get one and have a grand left over for tyres, entries and fuel.

Buy a good 205 with a decent lot of mods and you won't go far wrong.
-Brakes-steel hoses,fluid,pads -ferodo ds's mintex m11** 44/55
-Suspension - GAZ start at about 200 and go to about 650 for golds.
-Cage for chassis stiffness/safety
Decent set of tyres r888's?Slicks? and you will have a quick, cheap car.

Pug 205 might be old but for 2k you could definately get a good one and probably be in better condition than a 2k 172 clio.

Whatever you buy, please make sure it's safe. You will more than likely need to upgrade the brakes via track oriented pads and fluid as a minimum.

You may find there are a lot of people who take a dim view of other people using 'bangers' on track days. If you want to go banger racing, then go banger racing. Don't take a heap of a car on a trackday where you may damage other people's cars, as some people spend a lot of money on track cars and would be most upset to have a run it with someone who's driving a banger they don't give a monkeys about.

Do you see where I'm coming from?

I'm not saying that anyone shouldn't enjoy track driving, but be considerate for other people on the track and make sure that your car is safe and not going to cause anyone else a problem. So even if the initial purchase price is low, please don't scrimp on maintainence.

Cheers.

Banger is only a phrase, I would of course do everything within my power safety wise to bring it up to par!

I have a car that is my pride and joy and would not dream of tracking it, although I have to admit I think it's slightly naive to think your pride and joy can go onto a track and remain concours!

I think your concerns have more to do with the driver than the budget. One person may well view £2000 with higher regard than another will view £30,000. Budget is relative and therefore cannot be used as a measuring stick of driving ability and considerate track day driving.....in my opinion smile

You'd probably be better off with a M52B28 very much lighter!

But M30B35 is :
a) bulletproof comparing to M52B28 (main point)
b) more powerful
c) cheaper

I've just bought a 306 Rallye 2.0 16v which has a fixed bucket and 6 point sabelt harness, 2x sets of wheels, koni adjustable suspension, new bushes and higher temperature brakes, all in for £1,650. I plan to spend a few hundred on track tyres for the spare wheels, which brings us to £2k.

Could do a lot worse than that tbh mate smile

That's fantastic. It's got to be that or a 3 series. Both really good choices.

It certainly does. If you can get a cracking trackday car for £2k then that's great.
