Please advise.........Can anyone advise what i should do.
I don't have a load of cash to spend and i need a good off roader for trips around wet farm land and green lanes. The wife has a 1996 2.8td auto shogun lwb (never been off road). Do i (a)put some decent tyres on this and enjoy or (b)Do i sell this and buy a cheep 300tdi disco. Is it true that shorter is better,Is the lwb shogun too long or will massive tyres sort this out.

All info and feed back will be much Appreciated.
Many thanks
Dave.

Shorter is better for serious off road driving, but for what you're wanting a Shogun with some off road tyres should be more than capable. I can't see a Disco being much better to be honest.

If you want a seriously good off road for not a lot of money you'd do far worse than getting a 3 door patrol, or a SWB 88 landcruiser. The patrols really are remarkable, my LWB one went places a 4x4 just shouldn't be able to navigate despite being a huge beast smile

V.Nice, have view'd your pics in another thread.
I think my LWB has winter pack and have been told 33's are the way to go.
But have looked for 33/12.50x16,choice seems a bit limeted in 16 inch when you don't have a load of cash to spend.can you point me in the right direction.
many thanks.

If you don't want to spend much, keep the shoigun - it'll cost you MUCH less in the long run than any Land Rover product!

As standard but with MT's an LWB shogun will perform pretty well. Obviously you're not going to be winning and trialling comps but for general traipsing about on farms/fields/muddy tracks etc you'll be just fine.

If you want to start modding, might be better with a landy because parts are cheaper and easy to get in the UK.

HTH (i've owned both by the way)

I had 265x75R16 BFG MT's on mine with no lift, they're about 32" in diameter and about £100/corner... 285x75's are closer to 33" but about £130.

Could try a cheaper brand but BFG are very tasty tyres. The BFG MT's have really good road manners.

If the truck will be used mostly offroad then go for something daft like insa turbo's - they're dirt cheap and awesome in mud but feckin scary on the road! eek

landys are good fun as long as you have the time and money to do it right!!

my mates have a 90 full roll cage, lift kit, tyres winches ect

the ex devon 4x4 bobtail rangerover with a 4.8 v8?? which you might have seen on off road program

a forward controll 101 now in g4 orange!! with a 3.9 v8

a lightweight with a range rover chasis shortend and a 3.9 v8

there all great fun but you need the money!!

I must drive like a girl on road then because my modded 90 has Insa Turbo Specials on and no problems on or off road with them. On my V8 hybrid series 3 I have Greenway Anacondas and found them to be very good as well despite friends telling me that they are a handfull on the road?! I would have used the Anacondas again except the 90 came with nearly new Insas on already.
I must be a picture we and post some photos on here somewhen! biggrin

Do it!

I should have qualified my statement - I've been told by owners of insa turbos that they're kack on the road - I've never driven on road with em! In fact, are they definitely road legal?

Thanks for all your info guys,Is there a cheap tyre some where in the in the middle.........the mitzi will also double as my daily diver i dont mind tyre roar but i would rather a tyre that didn't feel as if it was trying to kill me at every corner on the road, i just don't have the funds at the mo for BFG'S.
Thanks
Dave.

Very similar tread pattern to bfg MT but they are remoulds IIRC.

I would expect them to be a long way off the off road ability of insa turbo special tracks but they should definitely be better onroad. Can't speak for quality, never owned them I'm afraid.

I know of at least 2 mates that either use or have used grizzlies and they really rate them on/off road, only one of them has switched to insas because he couldnt get grizzlies at the time and he rates them now. You pay your money you take your choice! Another tyre I have wanted to try is the recip trail, although I know no-one that has used them?!
Anyway, had a good day out today with 3 other 90's doing local greenlanes and ended up on Salisbury plain and the village of Imber. smile
