Problem with W reg 740i

Hi,
My father-in-law's W reg 740i ran out of water this morning, there was no leak and no warning.
It is now making an awful sound a bit like a chainsaw. Anyone experienced this before?
If so what is the remedy?

With the engine OFF, grab hold of the cooling fan and lift up and down...The most common issue with this engine is the water pump failing....normally the fan will smack the fan cowling and also the alternator belt will fall off.
