Here in Lancashire a plethora of gatso cameras has sprung up in record time. There are now 300+ at sites throughout the County and we are now officially the second most infested area in the country. The chairman of the local police authority recently claimed in the local press that the introduction of extra cameras was responsible for a 30% reduction in road casualties over the past 12months. What a load of complete bcks. This reduction in casualties is IMHO undoubtedly entirely due to a 30% improvement in the weather during the same period. Last winter there was seldom any cause to use the gritters and until last week it had only rained twice since February. This summer was the best since 1976 and we had record temperatures. As we all know, hot asphalt is sticky and grippy and aids road holding and braking - thereby thwarting the best efforts of accident prone numpties to run into each other. Keep an eye out for similar bcks being quoted by politicians in your area intent on introducing more revenue raising scameras. In the meantime I'm going to work out my frustations down the local tip by letting the CFC's out of some more old fridges to improve next summers motoring weather.

The ABD magazine 'On the Road' tells us that in 2002, Lancashire issued 128,000 tickets, took £7.6 million in fines and casualties for the first 8 months of 2002 numbered 516 compared with 465 during the same period in 2001.

Looks very like an 11% increase to me!!!!!

I think the scamerships are claiming a reduction in KSI figures (measured in 1000's per year) as opposed to deaths (measured in 100's per year).

A lot of the stats I've seen suggest that deaths are up but KSI's are down - any ideas?

I may be wrong but I think the figures being quoted are for the 12 month period to September this year.
What are KSIs anyway - Killed or Seriously Injured perhaps?
