hehe This has got all the makings of a massacre.

Now I'm skating on thin ice at the moment as I genuinely haven't bought her a sausage.

We are off on a family holiday of a lifetime to Oz over Christmas and New Year and she is protesing heavily that due to the cost involved she is happy to forgoe anything for Christmas. What makes this doubly difficult is that her Birthday is couple of days before (we'll be en route this year). Usually this means I end up get stitched up twice over the festive period or the gift is combined rolleyes

It is the most unsecret code.

What I am testing the water on, is if I genuinely don't get her anything - what will the reaction be eeksmashhehesilly

....Or does it mean new boots wink, Bag and a bottle of perfume.

I'll probably pick something up for her to unwrap on the flight - save any unsubtle raiding of Duty Free

If you dont get her anything she will winge.

Get her something and she will still winge about you buying something but then shut up and be happy with her new stuff.

Personally, I would go out and buy something.

Read my Valentine thread (in the Wiki section) for the definitive answer on this one.

Don't take the risk. It's a trap, and you will pay.

Take her at face value, and don't buy anything, tell her that you are doing this, but IF she sees anything that she likes on your trip, and changes her mind then you'll buy it for her smile

Dad hasn't gone out and bought my Mum a birthday/christmas/anniversary present ever, but she's always been happy about it as if they see something she wants, he buys it for her smile

ETA - I'm quite happy getting nothing too, so long as he knows that it is 'owed' wink

I made this mistake.

Worse; I'm sure we agreed "a small £10 present".

Apparently we didn't.

Apparently egg whisks do not make a great anniversary present.

That cost me a weekend in the peak district at Christmas, that did.

Tread carefully.

How about you suggest that she 'choose something' out in Oz? That way it will be a reminder of the trip as well. Or treat yourselves to dinner somewhere special.

But he could get her something, and still do this too.

Makes up for my lack of prezzies, she can have two hehe

I like these threads. It reminds me that single-dom isn't so bad after all.

So take her at her word. Buy her a birthday present and nothing for Christmas. That's what I'd do.

Obvioulsy you know your OH better than us though and can judge whether she'd be more pleased with a present than annoyed that you ignored what she asked you. I'd fall into the "annoyed at being ignored" camp, but I'm not female.

It seems silly people not saying what they mean, expecting others to guess their intentions and being upset when they don't guess correctly. Just say what you mean!

Do a bit of research, find a really nice restaurant in Oz. Book a table, buy a small gift (small tasteful piece of jewellery), present over dinner, should be job done.

This is too true; hence why if my other half keeps whinging I'll be buying her a shovel and tell her to keep digging holes!

The other thing I've never gotten, it's alright for me to shower her hundreds of pounds worth of goods! She only spends the bare minimum...is there something wrong there?

She gives the message of - if I see something that reminds me of you, then I get it, the value doesn't come into it...
